Gov. Rick Perry and First Lady Anita Perry will spend the day Tuesday touring shelters in Killeen, Tyler and Beaumont where some of the estimated 250,000 hurricane survivors who sought refuge in Texas are housed.
About 1,300 hurricane survivors have registered in Killeen and dozens are housed in a shelter set up at the city’s community center.
Meanwhile in Houston, a plan to move thousands of displaced residents from the Astrodome to cruise ships has been scrubbed.
The 4,000 or so evacuees whom officials planned to move to the ships don’t want to move, officials say.
“The dome is home for them,” Incident Commander Joe Leonard said.
Leonard says some of those sheltered want to focus on finding loved ones.
Others want more time to focus on their futures.
He says another shift so soon after their move from the squalid Superdome in New Orleans to the Astrodome would be just another upset in their lives.
Leonard says shelter officials are listening and giving their residents "more time to heal."
The move had been planned as Perry tries to deal with handling a continuing flow of hurricane victims into Texas with shelters already filled.
Part of his strategy had been to organize an airlift of refugees to other states, but federal emergency officials appeared to have put that airlift on hold.
