KILLEEN (December 3, 2012)—One man was killed early Sunday morning when he was struck by a pick up truck while trying to cross a busy roadway in Killeen.
The victim, whose name had not been released Monday morning, died just after 1 a.m. Sunday in the 1000 block of South State Highway 195 after he was struck by a pick up truck that then left the scene.
Bell County Justice of the Peace Garland Potvin pronounced the 46-year-old victim dead and ordered his body taken to the Southwest Institute of Forensic Science, in Dallas, for autopsy.
Killeen police spokeswoman Carroll Smith said officers were sent to the scene at 1:10 a.m. where they found the victim lying in the northbound lanes of the roadway.
Officers were able to establish that two men had attempted to cross the roadway from east to west.
One of the men made it across the lanes of traffic and when he turned to look for his friend, he saw a white, single-cab Nissan pick up truck strike the other man and continue to travel northbound on the roadway.
Another vehicle that was following the pick up truck also struck the man who was lying in the roadway, but that driver stopped and was at the scene when police arrived.
Smith said the Killeen police traffic unit still is investigating the accident and she asked that anyone with information contact Bell County Crime Stoppers at 254-526-TIPS (8477), or go online at www.bellcountycrimestoppers.com.
