Gov. Rick Perry and First Lady Anita Perry spent the day Tuesday touring some of the dozens of shelters in Texas where thousands of survivors of Hurricane Katrina have sought refuge.

The first couple greeted some of the survivors Tuesday morning at the Killeen Community Center.

As many as 1,500 storm survivors have registered in Killeen and about 50 were staying at the community center.

The Perrys later visited two shelters at Tyler’s First Christian Church and at Green Acres Baptist Church.

Those two churches are housing about 250 evacuees altogether.

Perry says Texans have been so gracious and giving, and he's really proud of the citizens of the state.

Nearly a quarter of a million evacuees are being sheltered and fed in Texas.

Earlier Tuesday plans to move some evacuees from the Houston Astrodome to cruise ships in Galveston were put on hold after the survivors said they prefer to stay put.

But Tuesday afternoon officials said some refugees will be flown from Texas to Tennessee.

A spokeswoman says American Airlines has been cleared to make two flights late Tuesday, both from Corpus Christi to Nashville, Tennessee.

American spokeswoman Denise Gorzell says the flights are taking place, with volunteer crews, at the request of the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

She says the flights were on hold until a schedule could be worked out.
