WACO (December 4, 2012)—A jury decided on a 30-year prison sentence late Tuesday afternoon for James Lee Saulters, 18, who pleaded guilty Monday to aggravated assault dating violence in a shooting that left his girlfriend seriously injured.

Emotions ran high as the jury announced its decision.

Saulters entered the guilty plea Monday as his trial was getting underway in Waco’s 54th State District Court, but opted to have the jury decide punishment.

Saulters, who was seeking probation, could have been sentenced to life in prison.

Kaci Greiger was shot in the head at around 12:30 a.m. on Dec. 23, 2011 on Redfish Lane near Hallsburg.

Greiger, who was 15 at the time, was flown from the scene to Scott & White Hospital in Temple and Saulters was arrested.

Both were Axtell High School students at the time of the shooting.

Greiger was later transferred to a rehabilitation center in Austin.
