When people move, they normally take their children's health and school records with them, but Hurricane Katrina has left thousands of families facing anything but normality.
In Houston, counselors and administrators are trying to register thousands of students living in large shelters for classes.
Children are being accepted without shot records or grades because those may have been lost in flood damaged areas.
The state of Texas has opened its public schools to displaced families.
As of 4 p.m. Tuesday, 121 displaced students had enrolled in Killeen Schools, 21 had enrolled in Waco schools and 14 had enrolled in Temple schools.
The 26 school systems in Harris County are all expecting a jump in enrollment.
Officials estimate that as many as 10,000 additional children may eventually attend classes in the city of Houston's public schools.
That could cost local taxpayers about $60 million.
Officials say they're hoping for federal and state aid to cover the costs of providing lessons for displaced children starting class far from home
Although the influx is putting a logistical and financial strain on schools, Paul Houston, the executive director of the American Association of School Administrators, says, "Districts will keep taking the students and figure it all out later."
