(April 29, 2008)--Auto glass repair shops say they have fielded thousands of calls from Belton residents trying to schedule a time to replace broken windshields in the wake of Friday’s hailstorm.
Shop owners such as Henry Witt of Affiliated Auto Glass have sent out crews to repair a record number of windshields for the past two days.
"We're doing like 257 yesterday so we're well over double of what we were doing," Witt said.
Witt's crews have been working long hours trying to replace as many hail-damaged windshields as they can and the demand for replacements has forced Witt to order more for the rest of the week.
"These are extras that we had to order just for the hail and I had 21 trucks that just loaded this morning and head to Belton," Witt said.
Several of those windshields and rear windows went to a landscaping and irrigation company in Belton.
More than half a dozen of the company’s trucks were pummeled by golf ball size hail Friday.
"It was just hitting the ground exploding. There are several trucks that have hail damage. I think we had six or seven trucks that had windows changed, back windows changed," Ben Pamplin said.
There's enough work to last Witt's crews the last of the week and business is expected to pick up for paint and body shops too.
One Belton shop has replaced hoods, roofs or side panels on about 40 cars since Monday.
