Federal emergency funds are on the way to the state and Texas counties and cities to help offset the cost of providing shelter and services to the more than 200,000 survivors of Hurricane Katrina who sought shelter here.
That includes transportation to new homes, emergency medical and dental care and prescription drug expenses.
A weekend memo from the Federal Emergency Management Agency listed items eligible for reimbursement to local governments.
An estimated 205,000 evacuees are staying in Texas and about half have been in one of the 197 Texas shelters set up by local governments.
A spokesman for Gov. Rick Perry says officials have not yet determined the total cost, but he says Perry is confident that Washington is going to "step up and do the right thing" to reimburse Texas.
The memo says overtime pay for regular staff and newly hired security, shelter and transportation staff is eligible for reimbursement, but store vouchers or phone cards will not be reimbursed.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency also won't reimburse schools for the costs of additional teachers or textbooks, but it will finance portable buildings and new computers.
Perry said Tuesday the state is working closely with other federal departments and officials including Secretary of Education Margaret Spelling to try to find funds for expenses FEMA won’t cover.
About 29,000 displaced students are enrolled in Texas schools, including more than 300 in Killeen and more than 50 in the Waco area.
Meanwhile some of the volunteers helping care for survivors in Texas are in need of some relief.
The Red Cross has been caring for more than 180 refugees in Grayson and Cooke Counties and more than 30 volunteer nurses have been donating their time at shelters in Bonham and Gainesville.
Retired nurse Donna Winters spent about six hours on the phone Sunday trying to line up more help.
She secured just two volunteers.
Red Cross volunteer and nurse Brandy Wilson says they need RNs, LVNs and even retired nurses.
