TEMPLE (December 28, 2012)--The Temple Office of Emergency Management (OEM) is activating the Emergency Warming Center Plan starting today to provide a temporary warming space for homeless or distressed persons in the city.
Temple Fire and Rescue spokesman Thomas Pechal said the decision to open the shelters was based on data from the National Weather Service on predicted nighttime temperatures below freezing with wind chill factors in the low teens and twenties tonight through Sunday morning.
Warming Center locations are located in the Victory Ministries, 305 South 18th Street and at Humble House, 613 South 7th Street.
The Victory Ministries location is available for men only and the Humble House is open to all.
Should those locations reach capacity, Pechal said, other locations can be opened .
The warming centers will be open from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 a.m. beginning December 28 and ending December 30, 2012.
According to Fire Chief and Emergency Management Coordinator Lonzo Wallace, "The intent of providing warming centers in Temple is to bring people that would normally be out in the elements on an extremely cold evening indoors during the coldest hours of the night.
“Guests will be provided a warm area for refuge, water, blankets, toilet facilities, and limited hygiene items."
Once activated, information on warming centers is available by contacting 211.
