HEARNE (December 31, 2012)—Texas Rangers and investigators from the Department of Public Safety are looking into events that resulted in a Hearne police officer shooting a man to death early Sunday morning.

KBTX-TV reports Hearne Police Department detectives say they officers responded just after 2:30 a.m. Sunday to a shots fired call in the 800 block of South Riley Street.

Police say a caller reported that someone was shooting a gun from a white vehicle in the Columbus Village Apartments parking lot.

When officers arrived they found the car and a confrontation between police and someone inside the car resulted in shots being fired by police.

One person was hit by bullets and was killed, police say.

No officers were injured.

They also reported finding a firearm at the scene that does not belong to police.

Family members identified the victim as Tederalle Satchell, 28, whom they say was mentally challenged.

"Next thing I know my sister ran into my bedroom screaming that he had been shot and killed," said Yulanda Nelson, the shooting victim's aunt.

"You could tell something was missing. He wasn't a normal child...he was slower than most children," said Nelson.

Family members told KBTX reporters Satchell did not own a gun.

Investigators have not provided any additional information on the incident, citing the fact that it remains under investigation.

Friends and family gathered at the Columbus Village Apartments for a candlelight vigil Sunday night.
