WACO (January 3, 2013)-- Former Calvert ISD athletic director and high school football coach Coylin Detivonne Grimes was sentenced Thursday to federal probation after earlier pleading guilty to a reduced charge stemming from a drug probe.

U.S. District Judge Walter S. Smith sentenced Grimes to 3 years on federal probation, and ordered him to pay a $1,000 fine and $100 in special assessment to the court.

The original charges against Grimes included conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute cocaine and accessory after the fact, but those were dropped in exchange for the guilty plea to the lesser charge.

Grimes to pleaded guilty to a superseding indictment charging "misprision of a felony", which means he was aware of illegal activity, but failed to report it.

The indictment says Grimes made known to a judge that he concealed the drug activity by allowing Doyle Allen and Gregory Henderson access to his brother's residence so that they could retrieve cocaine and later prevented law enforcement from finding it.

Grimes remained free on a $50,000 bond set by a federal magistrate after he was arrested on Aug. 17 as part of a wide-ranging drug sting, according to a report from the Texas Department of Public Safety.

He, his brother, Taureane Grimes and 14 other people were the focus of a probe of an alleged drug delivery ring that's been under investigation since 2011.

Grimes led the Calvert Trojans 6-man football team to a state championship in 2002 and had been coaching with the district since 1999.
