(May 4, 2008)--Authorities say Chicago Bears running back Cedric
Benson failed a sobriety test while operating a 30-foot boat, then
resisted arrest before being shot with pepper spray and dragged
ashore by officers on Lake Travis.

Travis County Sheriff's Department spokesman Roger Wade says
Benson faces charges of boating while intoxicated and resisting
arrest after an incident last night on Lake Travis.

Benson was released from jail early Sunday morning on a $14,500
bond. A call to Benson's agent was not immediately returned.

Benson was operating the boat with 15 passengers aboard when he was stopped by a Lower Colorado River Authority officer for a
random safety inspection.

The agency says in a statement that Benson failed a field sobriety test on the officer's boat and was uncooperative when the officer tried to take him ashore.

The river authority says Benson was sprayed with pepper spray,
then had to be dragged from the boat once it was on shore.

Benson, 25, had a monster college career but has done little
since the Bears took him with the fourth pick of the 2005 draft.

At the University of Texas he rushed for more than 5,500 yards
and 64 touchdowns. In three years with the Bears, Benson has rushed
for 1,593 yards and 10 touchdowns, averaging 3.8 yards a carry.
He's also missed 13 games.

So next time, all the people who are on this comment page who are calling Cedric Benson a "thug" take a look in the mirror next time you are in public drinking, Be it in a club or at a party or your momma's house, cuz you're looking at a thug. No one said he wasn't stupid and he shouldn't be punished, but a thug?? NO. Thugs have drive bys and sell drugs and I didn't hink that was in the newscast.

It is very much illegal to operate a boat or watercraft under the influence. Has been for quite some time. Too many innocent people dying on the water due to this. It is very strickly enforced in our state parks. I for one am glad. I also think the law should apply here as it does for cars. It also knows no color barrier. I agree that the kids at Baylor were no better. We all have family members that fall under the thug catagory. Some people just don't have a clue on how to behave. I am glad that no one was hurt.

James Henry- Obstruction of justice Robert Joseph- armed robbery Robert Joseph- Burglary Sergio Kindle- DUI Henry Melton- DUI Andre Jones- Aggravated robbery Tyrell Gatewood- possession of dangerous drugs Book'em Horns

Yes candice they are ALL THUGS! His actions while intoxicated are those of a thug! Operating a boat while intoxicated put all his passengers as well as others that may have been on that lake at risk! Blatant disregard for the welfare of others is a prime thug characteristic and their mantra! They dont care about anything but themselves! He should have complied and not resisted arrest! He made a choice to drink, get drunk and then act like a reckless fool! if he had acted like a decent person there would be no story for the media so get over yourself! By the way as a PRO football player, he sucks!! He should be concentrating on improving himself as a player so he can actually earn his salary and contribute to his team instead of trying to be a playa!

If he were not behaving like a thug, the police would not have had to resort to using pepper spray. Duh.

Posted by: Candice Location: Temple on May 5, 2008 at 11:12 PM
First, to all you racists. I didn't know being black and drunk made someone a thug. Look at Jenna Bush(the presidents daughter) who a couple of years back was arrested for being drunk and UNDERAGE, is she also a thug? Or Rogers Clemens, who took ILLEGAL steroids(drugs), and the other teammates and players who were accused or admitted their guilt, are they also thugs? I happened to have attended UT and sat in class next to Cedric and know the person not just the televised athlete, and all his glory and not so glory. Besides the news tells us what they want us to know, not what we need to know. And for all of you who called Cedric Benson another drunk and disorderly african american athletic thug, sweep around your own doorstep. Because today when you passed judgment on race and morals, you were a RACIST PIG. True fans stay true no matter what!!!!! UT Alumni For Life!!!

Juaqannellia African Americans are not the only ones who consume alcoholic beverages....get it together honey before pass judgement on someone's race

Another super role model for our kids, NOT!!!!! Another thug bites the dust, yeah!!!

Posted by: killeen on May 5, 2008 at 03:52 PM
uh hello resisting arrest, had to be pepper sprayed.... um thug what else do you need to know?

Posted by: fraudcop Location: Denver on May 5, 2008 at 03:39 PM
Alcohol certainly brings out the best in some people, dont ya think

Posted by: missthang Location: waco on May 5, 2008 at 03:05 PM
I missed the part of the story which would give the impression the guy is a thug?

Posted by: Patriot Location: Tx on May 5, 2008 at 10:25 AM
He's no role model....just a thug with a little money and a loosing career.

Posted by: Kris Location: Waco on May 5, 2008 at 07:44 AM
White athletes get in trouble too.

Posted by: Nic Location: Waco on May 5, 2008 at 06:32 AM
This is the perfect time for everyonr to see that this is why we don't need to have our kids look up to athletes. We never know what kind of person they actually are until they're arrested for something stupid because they think just because they're famous and have a lot of money they're above the law. I say keep arresting the idiots.

Posted by: Juaqannellia Location: Waco on May 4, 2008 at 07:52 PM
Another drunk and disorderly African-American athlete. No big surprises here. It is role models like these that are putting our children at risk.

Posted by: Ashley Location: Temple on May 4, 2008 at 04:42 PM
Sad.

Posted by: Anonymous on May 4, 2008 at 04:07 PM
You can take a thug off the streets, but you can't take the streets out the thug....just because some one makes good money does not mean they have good since or morals.....way to go,have a little pride about yourself
