(May 4, 2008)—President Bush left Central Texas Sunday morning to fly to Greensburg, Kan. to mark the first anniversary of the F-5 tornado that almost leveled the small town.
It was a Friday night a year ago that a storm with 205-mile-an-hour winds blasted Greensburg off the map, killing 11 of its 1,400 residents.
Sunday, the president delivers the commencement address at Greensburg High School.
Many of the small town's Victorian brick buildings and prairie-style houses are gone for good, but slowly, Greensburg has reappeared.
The water tower is back and so is the town’s lone traffic light.
Dozens of up-to-date, energy-saving homes have gone up, as well.
Since the storm, more than 130 home building permits have been issued, but about half of the town’s residents have not yet returned.
Visiting after the tornado, Mr. Bush vowed Greensburg would come back better than before.
His message Sunday: those words are coming true.
