(May 6, 2008)—A 3-year-old California girl who drank water laced with the date rape drug GHB is expected to recover, but a police official says, “It was touch and go for a while.”

The toddler was hospitalized Sunday.

Her 28-year-old mother told police she thought she had given her daughter a bottle of regular water.

Police say the woman and a friend were smoking methamphetamine at the time.

The girl evidently took only a few sips, but that was enough to make her violently ill.

A doctor said even a small amount of GHB could cause a child to stop breathing.

Tragic story. To all those that commented that there are plenty of people who would like to take in children like this: step up. There are literally THOUSANDS of kids that are in foster care just hoping to be adopted. While some foster homes are good, many just do it for the money. CPS has to have the ultimate goal of getting these kids back to the family because the sad fact is that no one will take these kids. What we really need is a stronger drug task force, especially in rural areas where meth is so rampant. Besides, this woman will probobaly just continue to have more children. Get rid of the drugs, not the kids!
