Colleen Saffron was one of the six spouses who were presented with President's Volunteer Service Awards Tuesday.

Saffron’s husband Staff Sgt. Terry Saffron was critically injured in the explosion of a roadside bomb in 2004 in Iraq that left him with a shattered jaw and a badly injured right arm.

Saffron collaborated with two other military spouses in 2007 to create a nonprofit organization called Operation Life Transformed, which helps education and train military spouses and those who care for wounded troops to work from home.

To date the organization has paid for online training for 30 spouses and caregivers.

One of those she helps is Maria Baez,” Mr. Bush said,” and she was the mom whose Marine son was paralyzed by a sniper bullet in Fallujah. Here's what Maria said about Operation Life Transformed: ‘I can't thank you enough for helping me and trusting me, and also for not giving up.’”

Saffron, who is legally deaf, also does volunteer work with Texas Hearing and Service Dog, which trains dogs to help people with deafness or mobility problems.
