(May 7, 2008)—During a press conference in Waco Tuesday, Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott unveiled a new Web site aimed at helping Texans avoid identity theft or minimize the damage in the event identities are stolen.

The recently launched website includes a theft victim’s kit that includes a checklist identity theft victims can use to prevent additional damage.

Videos on the site describe incidents and testimonials from actual victims, who share their efforts to restore their reputations.

“Identity theft is the fastest-growing white collar crime in America,” Abbott said.

“Victims whose credit is ruined or whose bank accounts are emptied because their personal information has been compromised must take immediate steps to repair the damage. Our new Web site contains helpful tools to help identity theft victims and Texans hoping to prevent identity theft.”

I have recently been a victim of ID theft to the tune of $11,000. After many days of lost wages, trying to find the "right" people to talk to and the "right" things to do, I am glad that there is finally a single place to go to that will give you the information you need to start clearing up the Mess. Cyber crime is becoming rampant, guard your information closely.

I recently began taking charge of my credit report and what is in it. Of coures there were some errors. There were 6 items showing to in collections. I began working on clearing these up. To my amazement I found out 1. the collection agencies are NOT regulated. 2. The collection agency has all my personal information DOB, SSN, DL etc. sold to them from the original debtor. 3. the collection agency may only have a copy of 1 or 2 billing invoices sold to them by the original debtor. 4. ANY ONE CAN BE A COLLECTION AGENCY EVEN A CONVICTED FELON. Maybe the AG should put some time in looking at these people.

So, this must be why AG Greg Abbott was unwilling to do his real job! The AG, for those of you that don't know is the "Supreme Law Enforcment of Texas"! Of course, I contacted him about my son's questionable death in McGregor, but I didn't get much of a response. Now, I know why~Because the Attorney General was preventing Identity Theft, rather than overseeing the law enforcement that most likely took my son's life!
