(May 10, 2008)--Wherever the President goes so does an entourage of aides, press, and Secret Service agents.
And when Mr. Bush is in Central Texas, the Secret Service relies on help from local law enforcement agencies to help provide security around the president’s ranch.
For the last eight years, the Waco Police Department has been helping with that task.
"They are the local law enforcement representative and they've been there for years before we got down there. And they give us their professional advice and input on a variety of things," said Mike Lee of the Secret Service.
The cost of protecting the President isn't cheap.
In the fiscal year of 2007, the Waco Police Department paid more than $80,000 to on- and off-duty officers who were assigned to protecting the President.
The federal government doesn’t reimburse the department for the expense, but officials say the money is incidental.
"Mainly we do it because it's an honor. We don't want anything to happen to you know the President or his family or foreign dignitaries when they're in our jurisdiction and mainly we do it because it's just right," said Assistant Police Chief Ryan Holt.
