(May 12, 2008) - Storm damage to the historic Coryell County Courthouse turns out to be worse than first thought, but not nearly as bad as it could have been.
County Judge John Firth told News 10 Monday that eight large windows were smashed, damage was done to one of the columns that decorates the courthouse roof and several trees were damaged, two to the point that they had to be removed.
One of the statues of Lady Liberty that sits on the southwest rooftop was damaged by high winds and water blew through broken windows in the second floor district clerk's office.
But even with all of that, said Firth, the damage could have been much worse and he said he felt lucky that not more damage was done.
The windows have been boarded up while they await replacement.
The damaged trees have been either cut down or pruned to remove broken limbs.
Firth said the roof column will be replaced and the statue will be stripped and repainted to cover the damage done there.
Firth did not have an estimate of the cost of repairs because adjusters and technicians have not yet surveyed the damage.
