(May 13, 2008)—Methane gas from the landfill will provide about 60 percent of the energy needed to fuel the boilers at Waco’s MARS Snackfood plant for the next 25 years, as part of a project whose completion local, state, federal and company officials celebrated Tuesday.
The nearly 30-year-old Waco plant, which employs more than 560, makes the popular Snickers, Starburst and Skittles candies.
The completion of the project to convert landfill gas into candy-making energy should save MARS more than $500,000 a year, MARS said, and should produce energy savings equal to what it would take to heat 2,700 homes.
“More than being a decision about the bottom line, this project is about taking responsibility for the future – for our business, for our Associates and their children, for our community, and definitely for our environment, said MARS Snackfood US President Todd Lachman.
Waco Mayor Virginia DuPuy, EPA Regional Administrator Richard Greene and State Rep. Charles “Doc” Anderson, R-Waco were among the officials who joined Lachman at Tuesday’s ceremony.
