Family Finds Racist Sign In Front Yard Save Email Print

A | A | A

(May 14, 2008)—Members of a Waco family say they’re outraged, after waking up to find a racist sign in their yard Saturday.

The Thomas Family described said the sign “uses the ‘N’ word, before going on to say, ‘lives here’ with an arrow pointing to the house”.

The family says the sign has left them scared, hurt, and angry.

"The sign is just unbelievable...but you know, what can you do? You do have ignorance in the world and it’s not going away,” Regina Thomas said.

Police say they're investigating the case, classifying it as a "biased incident" and not a "hate crime".

At most, the suspects could face a littering charge, punishable by fine.

Charges such as trespassing or harassment don’t apply to this case for one reason of another, according to investigators.

That does little to comfort the family. “You pay your taxes and then your police force can’t do anything,” said Thomas.

Anita2, i would like to thank you for taking a few HOURS out of your "busy" day to read my couple of posts!!! i have a very rewarding and happy life, i just like to post, and see what others thing about situations. whats your excuse?

Wow~I did not defend it. Of course it is wrong. Certainly it is hateful and disrespectful and offensive. My point is that nowhere are we guaranteed a life free from offense or hatefulness or disrespect. These are issues of the heart, and the heart cannot be legislated. I would not like it on my property, and in fact I have had two similar incidents of offensive things being written on two of my vehicles. I did not like it, but I stand by my position that those events, distasteful and frustrating as they were, were not crimes. Rather than majoring in the minors and making a lot of unenforceable rules against every little thing, what is needed here is the teaching of character. When a society has character and self-respect, incidents of this sort are self-prevented.

There was that movie where Slim Pickens was wearing a white robe, was pretty funny really. My neighbors have a racist sign in their yard, says "Obama in 08". Didn't Al Sharpton "bury" the "N" word.

I think Waco1000 is formally known on here as ERIKA! LOL

I think some are missing the point here. Someone places a racist sign on someone else’s personal property. There are a couple of things wrong with this picture. It’s not a simple case about name calling or how some use the N word. By the looks of it, it was done as a hateful act. Look closely at the sign, it doesn’t just have the N word, it states more than that. It also sports a swastika symbol. Not offensive, not hate? I disagree. If all of you that think it was not offensive or not like a crime or no big deal, I wonder how you would feel or even react if a personally offensive sign was placed on YOUR PRIVATE PROPERTY to intimidate or try to berate you. Shoot some of you would probably be upset if any sign was placed in your yard without your consent not matter what it said. And how do we know it isn’t a hate crime, is bigotry not hate? Maybe technically it’s not a crime, but it’s totally unacceptable and definitely hateful.

Waco1000- maybe Texan couldn't think of anything else to say and was feeling left out. Now how do they get the filling inside the twinkie? LMAO

TEXAN, please......... sorry i thought most people came on here to put down their opinion, i didnt know people came on here to be the grammar police and a detective. I guess i should of wrote he/she, and i was just guessing at the motive to try to show the individual's cowardly behavior. So hummmmm...........that solves your mystery, now you can again concentrate on how they get the filling inside a twinkie.....

This is certainly distasteful, but...a crime? Hardly. People have called each other names as far back as people go. Yes, it hurts, but maybe we need to stop being so ultra-sensitive. Before anyone nails me on this, I am not defending the perpetrators. I am a mixed race myself, but I just can't get all worked up about someone calling me a racial name. It's just a name from, obviously, an ignoramus. Why let them rent space in my head. It seems to me that in this age of PC-ness we get all bent out of shape by the ignorant words someone says, and yet we "tolerate" all sorts of despicable actions. What is up with that? On the video Eli said this is not a "hate crime." Well, I submit it isn't a crime at all. It is just some moron exposing his bigotry. And, once again not in their defense, but free speech is extended by the Constitution to all, even the idiots.

I find it interesting that WACO1000 seems to know the motive AND that the perpetrater is a ( he )?.... hummmm

Does color really matter? I think not. How many wars were fought between white people over religion? Color didn't factor into those wars. How many tribal battles have happened in Africa over the last few centuries? No white people involved in those battles, just black folks. What were the wars and battles about? They weren't about racism, that's for sure. There will always be battles and wars as long as there is hatred, and as long as there are people who think that differences are something to fight about. Maybe we, the human race, will grow out of this someday.

Posted by: Anonymous on May 15, 2008 at 01:38 PM
I find it ironic that a BLACK person can call us "WHITEY" and such, and no one says a thing about it, but let me call a black the "N" word...and it is automatically a racist statement!

Natasha you sound like a very well educated and sensible perosn. What a wonderful world we would have if just a few were more like you.(and my son's best friend is white, they even look alike).

I knew this one would get a lot of comments. Some people on here live in a fantasy world. KKK your an idiot and so is everyone else in Hico. Your the type of people that give white peple and any other person a bad name. Now go ride your horse and eat hay............hahahahah.

Posted by: Natasha Location: Gatesville on May 15, 2008 at 12:17 PM
I was raised in a family where racism was expected in my family..Not a day went by that I didn't hear the N word. I am now grown and completely disagree with the N word, regardless of what race it is coming from. I now have children and my son's best bud is black...All I see is an innocent child and not a color. Ignorance is very prominent in this world and I think that the people that posted this sign in these peoples front yard...Got the attention that they wanted...PUBLICITY...Too bad they couldn't have went out and did something productive for society instead of something childish and demeaning.

Posted by: austin Location: tx on May 15, 2008 at 12:03 PM
i think that the family should put a sign in their yard that reads" thats right honkey" its only fair. and to kkkowboy. its a--holes like you that screw it up for other white people. you dont need to make comments like that.

This is 2008 people whoever did this white, black, mexican, whoever it's wrong. Some of you have made points but some of you sound so ridiculous. I'm white, I was taught all my life that other races were all inferior. I came out of it and formed my own beliefs and found out there were a lot of black people that I would rather call my friends than a lot of the white people. There are good and bad people in every crowd and the "n" word doesn't belong in any crowd. I would never use the "n" word in a derragatory manner, but my black friends get mad at me when I say it the same way they say it. I say I get the same dumb looks you get walking around with you. I don't think the problem lies with friends speaking slang to each other, the problem lies with racial stunts like this happening and people like this KrazyKountryKowboy from Hico. I pray for you. I mean can't we all just get along. To the Thomas family, May God bless you and keep you all the days of your lives.

To WB, what exactly does being mexican have to do with it? i dont understand what your point is. And to NEWS, you must be one of the people that just came out of the polygomist compount, saying "colored people"? lol! it is 2008! i do agree with NOT U, there might always be racism as long as there are different races. it also mainly depends on the type of people you meet, you always end up assosicating them with the race. I doubt it was the Thomas family that set this individual off, he just found someone in a nice neighborhood who might not retaliate as strong as some one in another neighbor hood. Thomas keep your head up

To Dave, I don't know who Bartoli is but I'm Black & I don't like rap either. I listen to Gospel, jazz & R&B & there r a few country singers I like. & 2 KrazyKountryKowboy, u r the epitome of my original comment. 2 ensure u spelled the name this way 2 reflect the KKK is meaningless, a perfect example of those who must cover their faces and be hateful. Michael Myers & Jason also wore a mask to act evil! Why must u hide ur face if u believe in hatred so much? If u truly believe it's o.k. 2 hate, then show ur face! Ignorance is bliss so if it turns u on 2 parade in sheets, a "White Sale" should b coming soon! LOVE, LOVE, LOVE! I LUV U KrazyKountryKowboy! U r human w/a heart that was taught 2 hate w/o reason but GOD luvs us both! 2 "news," n case u haven't looked, we ALL have some color. We're a beatiful shade of browns, whites turn pink & tan, Hispanics share beautiful shades of brown. AREN'T GOD'S CREATIONS BEAUTIFUL!!!! LUV U ALL!!

I would like to apologize to the family for this racist attack on them. All they want is to make a home in a good community which basically Waco is a good community. Unfortunately there will always be bigots among us! That's life and you can't change that. But you can change how you react to incidents like this! This is a good family who deserves better than a racial sign in their front yard. The people who live in this neighborhood need to make this a priority and send a message to the person/s who did this. Our police force can only do so much. Time for this community to speak up and say incidents such as this will not be tolerated.

I think it's too funny that if this had been a Mexican family that found a racist comment on their front yard everyone would be fighting a lot but since it's black people everyone is quiet and nice. Anyone ever wonder why this particular family got the sign out of all the other black families in Waco? Maybe it's the way they act or something they have done. I doubt this is a drive by sign posting.

Jerry in Evant, you dog out the police now but when you need help they will be the first people you call. They will come out and help you regardless of your feelings for them. That's what real professionals and heroes do! To the Thomas Family .. I am so sorry that you have to deal w/this kind of ignorance. This is absolutely no excuse for this. My prayers are with you!! GOD BLESS YOU AND KEEP YOU SAFE!

This is a place for comments and opinions and that is exactly what everyone has expressed. I hope no harm comes to this family. However, as others have made statements about, I hear it all day everyday and its not from white people or hispanics.

First.. I want to say that whoever did this to the family was wrong! BUT, I too hear the "N" word all the time and it's NOT from whites. And no one can drive in any town without being bombarded with blasting N word "so-called" music. Yes, who is degrading who?? And Jerry in Evant, you're an idiot!

Posted by: confused Location: mart on May 14, 2008 at 02:47 PM
ive been counting how many times i hear the n word here at work, i heard it 16 times today, the day isnt over yet, all who said it were black. then in the parking lot at lunch i had the joy of hearing the n word blasting from the stereos of: you guessed it, blacks. just exactly who is degrading who. i have not heard one white person say it all week.

Posted by: Jessie Location: Waco on May 14, 2008 at 02:34 PM
Athough we may not be able to control the action of ignorant individuals. What we can control is our reactions to their actions. Our reactions to people like this determine their future actions. Example, If we make a big deal they know, they bothered you. If you go on with life and don't let this seem to matter, then I don't think it will be a big deal. Stupid people like this just want attention. It should not matter what color the person was that put the sign out. We know they are ignorant because they put the sign out. Remember the saying: It's better to let people think your stupid then to open up your mouth and remove all doubt. Apparently this person forgot this. May God Bless the Thomas family and I will be praying that this person gets whats coming to them. You reap what you sow!!

Posted by: To talleyho Location: Texas on May 14, 2008 at 01:14 PM
...."you have been brain washed in your thinking there is good and bad in every race and no such thing as a white person we are all from different countries around the world"....tallyho, I am sorry for what you went through so many years ago, but so many people can not let go of the past and move on and want to blame everyone for everything. You are wrong, there is good and bad in every race, white, black, mexican, asian and indian and all of those in between. I too do not understand why it is such a disgrace for other races other than blacks to use the "N" word. I don't undestand it and never will. So, why not protest against blacks using the "N" word, because there lies most of your problems. If everyone would move on into the new times and leave the race issue alone, we might just find that more people could get along. To the Thomas family, hold your head high, if you have love in your hearts, love will be shown to you.

The whole race wars thing really upsets me...we all look alike on the inside. Honestly what would the police be able to do? How would they find out who did this? I agree that there should be something done but how? Did anyone notice that on the cone it said, "this was random so if white people live here sorry for the inconvenience"...some people I cant believe it!

Posted by: neyney Location: waco on May 14, 2008 at 12:32 PM
I agree with tallyho there is good and bad in every race and we do still live with a lot of racism in our world. There are a lot more mixed couples now a days then I have ever seen in my 41 years. My daughter goes to school with ALLLLL mixed kids and she is friends with everyone because that is what I taught her. My great grandfather was a US Marshall back in the 1900's and would have loved to hang all the colored people. My dad was and is the same growing when I was growing up with him. I thank goodness in MY generation I did not see that and I was friends with everyone and still am. My husband is Spanish and I am white and till this day we get all kinds of crazy looks especially from the older people from THAT generation. There is good and bad in all and we just have to make friends because we are ALL in this world together till the end. God Bless!!!

don't forget you history these so called racist hid behind white sheets were afraid to show they faces they creep at night to put signs in the garden what a bunch of idiots/I was married to a white guy who beat me and our children I left him for a kind G.I/ I befriended in germany an African American who raised my 2 girls and that was 32years ago he was and still is a wonderful Husband, Father and Grandfather so all you racists out there take warning we are not going anywhere you have been brain washed in your thinking there is good and bad in every race and no such thing as a white person we are all from different countries around the world

Posted by: Madmax Location: Killeen on May 14, 2008 at 10:54 AM
For those who cannot read, the Waco Police Department is investigating the crime. If you wanna cry and whine on why it is not a hate crime, blame your legislatures and not the Police. The Legislature makes the laws and the Police enforces it. People always want to nag about why the Police won't do this and do that; that's because we don't have the authority to unless it meets the elements of the crime. So write your local legislature and cry instead of crying about the Police who only have limited power...

I would like to say I grew up in a town where it was the norm for things like this to happen and I couldnt wait to get away from all that ignorance. This is a perfect example of how people just cant seem to leave others alone and go on about thier lives living it to the fullest. I am truly sorry that someone had the nerve to do this. This lady served this great nation and this is the thanks her and her family get. I just wish people would realize we are all Americans no matter what race you are.

To clarify my earlier post. "minority white guy" is the name of an earlier poster that I was responding to. I have no idea who did it. Whoever it was, was obviously wrong. My best to the Thomas Family who still don't deserve what happened to them no matter who did it.

Posted by: Anonymous Location: Waco on May 14, 2008 at 10:09 AM
Obviously, everyone knows what the sign said, but I find it odd that the news report does not ever SHOW the word on the sign on television. They act as though it carries with it some magic, prejudice-inducing power that if someone sees it on TV they will automatically go out and join the KKK. Good God, what kind of society are we that we are not big enough to show such words on TV newscasts, in context of a legitimate news report, yet we are surrounded by hate and violence in pop culture such as music, cinema, and literature, all the time and no one blinks? How do we KNOW for SURE what that sign said, unless we see it for ourselves?! How do we know it doesn't say that JELLY DONUTS live here, or some such other thing? Are we just supposed to believe the media without proof?

Posted by: Anonymous on May 14, 2008 at 09:59 AM
This goes to show that racist are affraid of the African American community. They believe that putting up this sign will run this family off. I hope that the Johnson family will stay and show that they are not affraid of racist slander.

this is terrible. i dont feel it should be taken lightly and regardless of the color of the individual who did this, there should still be heavy consequences that come with it because of the racism associated with that word. i am half white / half choctaw indian and although i was raised that there are "N's" in every race - that they are the ones who hate, murder, steal, etc - i know that not all other people see it that way. but skin color doesnt matter and even if it was a joke by whoever, the jokester should be punished thouroughly. to the Thomas Family - stay strong & may God bless you

The Thomas family does not deserve this. No one does, but they are strong, smart people, so I am sure they can overcome this ignorance. minority white guy, this is more than just about one word. If you watch the video here, and see the sign, it is obvious that the remarks were racist. It was a cowardly, ignorant, disgusting act.

Posted by: WACO100 Location: WACO on May 14, 2008 at 09:09 AM
another job well investigated by the Waco PD. NOT!.... i guess some one has to get hurt before they don anything right? Then there comes the, "we should have, we could have, and why didnt we?" statements. i hope it was just some one being stupid (whatever color they might be),but they kind of need to take this stuff seriously.

Posted by: Marlin Location: Marlin on May 14, 2008 at 09:08 AM
Want to bet a family member put the sign out there? Don't accept face value. Racists blacks have been known to put these "racists white signs" out to garner attention and to "get back" at society for being racist. Just goes to show who the real racists are when blacks manufacture incidents to "prove a point" that America is racist. Like "dude" below, I have seen blacks do this. I have read of blacks doing this as well. I ask everyone, wait until the truth comes out, then consider the facts....don't knee jerk that some racists fool that was white did this...it could have been an hispanic, white, black, asian, or purple Martian for all anyone knows now! Wait and see......

Posted by: Anonymous on May 14, 2008 at 09:07 AM
We should stop the (N) word completely and that includes the black community that uses this word to each other all the time. It should not be acceptable anywhere by anyone.

Posted by: minority white guy Location: texas on May 14, 2008 at 08:49 AM
if the n word is such a racist remark, why is it that whenever i hear it its coming from a black person? yes ive heard white people say it, but not anywhere near as much as black people say it.if you dont like the word, stop using it so much.

Since no type of investigation is being conducted at this point, I pray nothing more serious occurs. Thomas family may God watch over and protect you.

It's to see that ignorance will never go away. I see some type of racism everyday. I tell my children that we are all created equal and that the color of your skin or hair does not matter. I am glad this family has spoken up and is not intimidated by the sign.

we had the same situation come happen where i work, writing the same thing on walls and leaving signgs around, all racist stuff. the blacks demanded that someone be fired when they are caught, well we caught the guy red handed, he was black. when the company tried to fire him all the black people rallied behind the culprit. they said it was just a joke and it was no big deal. before we jump on dumb rednecks it is possible that a black person done this.

this act was stupid and childish. when i was a child my mother told me there are "N's" in every race i never thought thought of this word as meant for any one race. GOD BLESS you family. i tell my grandkids we are ALL Americans. we really should stop using the pre-fixes before American, like i said we are ALL American.yes i am caus sorry don't even know how to spell that whole woed as i don't even believe we should be using it.GOD BLESS AMERICA
