John Edwards Backs Obama Save Email Print

A | A | A

(May 14, 2008)--Making a surprise appearance Wednesday evening in Michigan, former Sen. John Edwards said he has decided to back Senator Barack Obama.

Edwards, who dropped out of the presidential race in January, said, "Democratic voters have made their choice, and so have I."

He said Obama stands with him in a fight to cut poverty in half within 10 years.

Edwards also praised Hillary Rodham Clinton, saying Democrats "are a stronger party" because of her.

The endorsement came a day after Clinton defeated Obama by more than 2-to-1 in the West
Virginia primary.

The loss highlighted Obama's challenge in winning over so-called "Hillary Democrats,” white, working-class voters who had supported Edwards in significant numbers before he left the race.

She had also sought Edwards’ endorsement.

It's a funny thing to me all of the talk about "white" working class people voting for Hillary and yet over 90% of black Americans voting for Obama? So what? I get tired of hearing what white people do. I bet most all the blacks ARE voting for Obama due to his skin color. Edwards is a man so do you think a man wants a woman to be the leader? America might be ready for a black President, but American men do not seem to be ready for a woman boss. No matter, John McCain will be our next President as he is in the real world.

Smart man not backing Hillary. People say she's tough I think she's just desperate. She only put up with Bill cheating because she needed his endorsement when she ran for office.

The American people just got the short end of the stick this election (as we have many others). On one hand the Dems, have Billary and Osama.....i mean Obama, and on the other you hav the oldest man in the world, Mr. Mac Cane (lol). i actually considered Obama for a while until he started to push his ethnicity to much...come on, im not white but if i was i would be furious. If a white guy said "vote for me i'm white" he would be racist but when Osama says it, we stay quiet? I am at the point of maybe not voting unless i hear some plans and not just pretty speeches, which anyone can write.

if you vote for obama or hillary you will waste your vote.

It would have to SNOW in July before I would consider voting a Obama/Edwards ticket. No wait..not even then!!

Wonderful choices the democrats have, Barrack Hussein Obama Bin Laden who has nothing in common with millions of black Americans who are voting for him and a woman who cant even control her husband much less a country. What a joke. The republicans are not much better off.

I agree that the Dems. have not spoken, yet. But, Lisa, I believe that you completely misunderstand the republican (small-case r) principles upon which this country was founded. We have the system we do because we wanted to protect minority rights, whiile still allowing majority rule. The Electoral College system, and the primary systems later developed reflect that intention--the people as a whole have a voice, but the states qua states have a voice, as well, so that the nation, not just a particular section of it, is better represented in its highest office. Primaries are also testing grounds for potential nominees; the extended period of time over which they endure will refine and prove those who are capable of handling major crises and separate them from those who will crack easily under a small amount of pressure. Obama is showing severe cracks in his constitution as a candidate and potential chief executive. Let the convention decide, but let the best candidate win.

Edwards, said,"Democratic voters have made their choice, and so have I." Democrats havent said SQUAT yet.. Democratic convention not till August? and then its only a chosen few who get to say who our candidate is. I think he just made the dumbest career choice. but then again Obama prolly has him pegged as his runnin Bro. I still think Elections should be whoever gets the most votes wins. but then again Gore would have beat the little Shrub and our country might have been better off. Let all peoples voice be heard not just that of the rich delegates that want to party for a week.
