Baylor Regents Wrap Up Meeting, Take No Action On Lilley Save Email Print

(May 16, 2008)—Baylor University Regents met behind closed doors Friday, approved a budget, elected officers and wrapped up without taking any action on the future of Baylor President Dr. John Lilley, who was under fire after denying tenure to 12 of 30 faculty members.

Lilley reversed seven of those denials earlier this week.

According to published reports, regents were also concerned about the pace of fundraising for the university’s endowment.

Regents did vote Friday to approve a $366 million operating budget for 2008-2009, which is $21.1 million more than the original 2007-2008 budget adopted last year.

Regents elected Dr. Howard K. Batson of Amarillo to serve a one-year term as chairman.

He succeeds Harold R. Cunningham, effective June 1.

Donell Teaff of Waco was elected vice chair.

Regents Stan Allcorn of Abilene, Harold R. Cunningham of Crawford, R. Stephen Carmack of Hinton, Okla., Ramiro Peña Jr. of Waco and R. Dary Stone of Dallas were re-elected to three-year terms.

Lilley was installed as Baylor’s 13th president on April 21, 2006 after regents elected him to succeed former President Dr. Robert Sloan.

Lilley took over from acting President William Underwood on Jan. 1, 2006.

Underwood moved to Macon, Ga. where he is now president of Mercer University.

It is sad that Baylor has had very little stability in its leadership for years now. Herbert Reynolds seems to have been the only president that had any kind of ability to lead the institution over an extended period of time.
