(May 17, 2008)—The Associated Press was reporting Saturday that Sen. Edward Kennedy, D-Massachusetts, was in the hospital after suffering a seizure.
Kennedy was taken to the hospital overnight, according to a source quoted by the AP who requested anonymity.
There was no word on his condition.
The medical problem developed when Kennedy was in Hyannis Port.
CNN reports a 911 was made from the Kennedy compound just after 7 a.m. CDT Saturday.
Kennedy was transported first to Cape Cod Hospital and then flown by helicopter to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.
He was flown by helicopter from Cape Cod Hospital to Massachusetts General Hospital.
A statement released by Kennedy’s office said only that the senator was taken to Cape Cod Hospital Saturday morning after feeling ill and that he was transferred to Boston for further evaluation after consultation with his doctors there.
Kennedy, 76, has been in the Senate since election in 1962, completing the term of his brother, John F. Kennedy.
Presidential candidates were sending their best to the hospitalized senator Saturday.
Barack Obama says he's been in contact with Kennedy's family, and says he'll be "rooting" for the man he describes as "a giant in American political history."
Earlier this year, Kennedy very publicly endorsed Obama in the Democratic race for president.
Both Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton praised Kennedy Saturday for his contributions to health care.
Republican John McCain says he has the highest respect for Kennedy, describing him as a "skillful, fair and generous partner" as well as "a legendary lawmaker."
