(May 17, 2008)—Twenty-four people were injured when a spinning carnival ride collapsed Friday night at a fair near Sacramento, Calif.
Most of the riders were children.
Three of them had to be airlifted to hospitals but others had only minor injuries.
The ride, called the Yo-Yo, collapsed at California's Calaveras County Fair and Jumping Frog Jubilee, which is held just outside the Gold Rush-era town of Angels Camp in the Sierra Nevada foothills.
Witnesses say they saw the ride's operator struggling to stop the ride.
One fairgoer said she thought there was something wrong with the ride earlier in the day.
The ride has metal arms extending out from a pole at the center.
Each has a seat attached and the seats go up and down as the ride spins.
An emergency official says the pole collapsed and the seats hit the ground or other parts of the machine.
California accident investigators will be trying to pinpoint the cause.
