(May 21, 2008)—A Waco man who was shot during a home invasion robbery early Wednesday was able to drive himself to Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center, despite two gunshot wounds, police said.
John Huerta, 24, told officers he was working on his computer just after midnight in the bedroom of his residence in the 900 block of North 17th Street when he heard a noise outside the door of the room.
Just as he started for the door, he said, two men rushed in, pointed pistols at him, and ordered him to get down on the floor.
He complied, but then as he tried to get up, one of the men shot him in the right knee, police said.
The men told him they would kill him if he didn’t do what he was told, so he remained on the floor while the men ransacked his bedroom, taking jewelry and his wallet.
The men left the bedroom and Huerta looked up to see them standing at the doorway, still pointing their pistols at him.
One of the men fired again, this time striking Huerta in the thigh, police said.
Huerta remained on the floor until he was sure the men were gone, police said, and then called 911.
He didn’t wait for help to arrive, however, and drove himself to the hospital.
When officers arrived, they found the back door of the residence open and blood on the steps and on the bedroom floor.
They learned a short time later that Huerta was at Hillcrest.
The men for whom police are looking are both black and between 16 and 20 years of age.
Both are between 5-foot-5 and 5-foot-9 and both had slender builds, police said.
One was wearing a white T-shirt and the other a black T-shirt, police said.
Police are asking anyone with information to call either the Waco Police Department at (254) 750-7500 or Waco Crime Stoppers at (254) 753-HELP.
