4-Year-Old Texas Boy Shoots 2-Year-Old Sister To Death Save Email Print

A | A | A

(May 23, 2008)--Medina County officials say a 4-year-old boy some picked up a shotgun while playing in his parents' room and accidentally shot his 2-year-old sister to death.

The shooting took place in Natalia, about 30 miles southwest of San Antonio.

Sheriff Randy Brown said he didn't know the details of the Thursday afternoon shooting, but that officials were interviewing the boy.

Brown would not say if charges would be filed but said that making a gun accessible to a child without criminal intent is a misdemeanor in Texas, even if someone dies as a result.

I work EMS and I Have a loaded gun in my house. I also have three small childern. My gun is loaded but out of the reach of little hands. My oldest boy is 12 y/o and he can not find my gun. So all of the people out there who are saying that you shouldn't have a loaded gun in your house are full of it. But if your like me and you do have a gun in your house and it is not in a locked box then you need to put it somewhere that little hands can not reach or find it. and when i say little hands I do mean children and thats anyone that you do not want to use the gun.

Guns SHOULD not be in houses - period!! I am with "stupid" Ginny as you guys call her. If it is for hunting - keep it out of the house. If it is for protection - and its locked up with no bullets - what good is it doing you? Sorry, but to me Ginny is the only one on here that has it right!!!

LYN, I understand your feelings regarding this situation. We paid a far bigger penalty than a misdemeanor for our accident. We paid for all of the medical expenses, which was thousands of dollars, and we still pay mentally everyday when we see this girl and her parents! Even though we are still friends with them, because they understood that “accidents do happen”, it still weighs heavily upon our hearts. Yes, I agree, maybe Texas should consider a change. I can only speculate, but I would think that the civil laws of Texas allow for a person to recover from another person who permits a child to gain access to a loaded firearm. But, now tell me, in this case, just how is that going to help this little four year old boy? He would be placed into a foster home, grow up without his parents, most likely thinking he was responsible for sending his parents to prison, all on top of killing his sister? Now just what good is that going to do him, or anybody?

the laws need to change in Texas misdermeanor for allowing a child access to a loaded gun both parents need to go to jail

I can only half imagine what he will go through. I say “half” because 18 years ago my son accidently shot a girl in the ear with a pistol when he was 15 years old. Thank God her injuries weren’t life threatening. I had the unloaded pistol in a concealed box. I taught my son about gun safety while he and his brother were growing up and every time we went shooting and hunting, and he had also taken his hunter safety course as soon as he was old enough. So what happened? He was a boy, she was a girl, he was a teenager showing off. He wanted to show off his dad’s gun to his friends. He did use the safety he had learned. He pointed the pistol towards the floor, pulled the slide back, looked into the chamber to check that it was empty, let the slide go forward, and THEN HE REMOVED THE MAGAZINE! Now there was a bullet in the chamber! NOW IT WAS LOADED! He turned towards the girl with the gun raised and his finger on the trigger, because he KNEW it was empty. And he shot her.

Because of the length I have to split this in two postings. My heart goes out to this family, not only to the parents, but also to the little boy. He may only be four years old now and not be able to comprehend what has happened, but soon, much too soon, he will. He will have to live the rest of his life trying to copy with killing his sister. Professionals will be forever telling him that it wasn’t his fault, that he was too young to “know”, that “it was an accident”, that “it was God’s will”. All of this is true. But it won’t help him for a very long time. The reason I am writing this is to say a couple of things. 1. Safety and Judgment are the only things that will help to prevent not only gun accidents, but all accidents, 2. You can NEVER teach too much safety, 3. You can NEVER teach JUDGMENT, it is a self-learned process, and 4. If you don’t fully understand something, STOP and ask for help. My words won’t help this family, but maybe they will help someone else

YOU CANNOT HAVE GUNS IN THE HOME WITH CHILDREN OR YOU ARE WAITING FOR AN ACCIDENT TO HAPPEN. THIS HAPPENS TO OFTEN.

Posted by: Patriot Location: Tx on May 27, 2008 at 07:56 AM
What Ginny?? How old are you?? Most people have rifles & shotguns for hunting....handguns are for protection and can be hid from small children. Ummm the child above used a SHOTGUN. If you think a loaded gun in the home in sight of small children is a good thing...you are a idiot! Wow, that's the most stupidest comment on this post. Go take some GUN SAFETY COURSES LITTLE GIRL before someone in your home gets shot!

this is horrible and i'm so sorry for the parents. but this is for the stupid comments of i have guns in my house for protection but they are locked up and there is no ammo in the house. hello then why have the gun? if it's locked and you need it real quick like in a hurry you will be dead before you get the gun out of the lock box or go get ammo out of the house why not just use a baseball bat to protect yourself? these really are the stupidest comments i've ever read. thank you for letting me say this.

My daughter's best friend/sister died at 13 years old this past January because her dumb boyfriened wanted to show her his family's gun. He THOUGHT he took all the bullets out and guess WHAT? He did not. Now we have to visit her in the ground every weekend to say we love you. It's sad because his mother did not know he even had the gun and she was HOME IN THE HOUSE. He is 14 years old not 4 and did not know how a gun works either and shot his girlfriend. PLEASE,PLEASE,people lock your guns up when you have children because you NEVER know. This little boy had the gun for a while and IF just one of his friends would have told someone then the little girl would still be alive today. I HATE guns now for that reason for STUPID do not know how to use them for safety only!!!

Posted by: Kel Location: Cove on May 25, 2008 at 10:26 AM
The gun didn't do the shooting but it is our responsibility to make sure our kids are safe and HOW MANY KIDS HAVE TO DIE TO GET IT THROUGH THE ADULTS HEAD TO PUT THEIR GUNS AWAY!!!!

Posted by: mom33 Location: mexia on May 23, 2008 at 11:32 PM
pitiful tragedy, this is a reminder to us all to keep stuff thats dangerous and lethal out of our children's reach. i pray for this family .

I don't see where anyone is posting anti-gun comments. This is about safety precautions that every gun owner should take especially with children in the home. It's the LAW in Texas that every person hunting from 12 years old and born after 1971 MUST take the Hunter Safety Course before they can get a license. It's all about safety, safety safety! A loaded gun should be WAY out of reach from children. All my guns are unloaded and locked up in a gun safe along with the all boxes of ammo. This is a terrible tragedy for these parents. The boy was only 4 and had no concept of what he was doing.

Posted by: Anonymous Location: San Saba on May 23, 2008 at 05:02 PM
I hope all of these anti-gun people realize that the gun didn't do the shooting. Let's all learn from this terrible tragedy and keep our guns in safe places and educate our little ones!

Posted by: Tamara Location: Waco on May 23, 2008 at 04:32 PM
I agree with you Anonymous. Here comes the should of, would of, where were the parents, how comes. I think people forget that a child was killed, and the parents are grieving. My thoughts and prayers are with this family.

As a parent this just breaks my heart. My family owns guns, BUT they are ALWAYS locked up, with no access to the key, not to mention there are no bullets in the household. I've had a cousin who accidently shot himself while cleaning a loaded gun. I know first hand just how horrible this can be. This is tragic accident and just comes to show how careful you have to be when it comes to firearms. Educate yourself and your family. When you have children especially, you cannot make them availiable, because it is human nature to be curious anout things like guns. My heart and prayers got out to the family.

Posted by: Cynthia Location: Moody on May 23, 2008 at 04:17 PM
The weapon was not locked up in a combination safe. This is inexcusable for the gun owner to be so careless. I lost my sister due to my own father's mistake of leaving a rifle in plain sight. She was only 14 years old and she was upset, and in a matter of seconds, BETH ANN was gone from me forever. This child is gone forever. GUN OWNERS DON'T FORGET TO USE DUE CAUTION. LOCKING UP YOUR WEAPONS MAY SAVE A LIFE.

Posted by: Marie Location: Waco on May 23, 2008 at 03:59 PM
My thoughts are with the Family of this little girl. I do believe in having weopons in your home for protection but you have to lock them up. People think that it will never happen to them but it does...

How sad! My thoughts and prayers are with this family. BUT look out here goes all the bad comments....not to mention the Anti-gun people!
