(May 26, 2008)—Authorities are hoping autopsies will provide some answers bout the deaths of five people whose decomposing bodies wre found inside a gated California community.

The bodies of two sisters in their early 20s, an elderly woman, and a man and woman in their 40s had been in the house for two to three weeks before they were found by relatives Sunday in the Orange County town of San Clemente.

Neither suicide nor homicide is being ruled out, although police say they are not looking for any suspects.

The family members hadn't been seen in at least two weeks.

Sheriff's deputies performed a welfare check on the house May 14 and again Saturday, but found nothing amiss from outside the home.

In defense of the officers, if the air conditioner was on, decomposition would be delayed somewhat, so it is possible they had only been dead a short while when they did the welfare check. Besides that, it would take a while for the smell to permeate the residence so it could be smelled from the outside.

What kind of "welfare check" was that? That was a lazy officer, and negligent.

How do you perform a welfare check from OUTSIDE the house, did anyone think to knock, look through windows, question the neighbors about the last time they been seen? Two weeks, I know they smelled something!

Ok, WHAT?!?! Sheriff's deputies performed a welfare check on the 14th and 17th but found nothing amiss? Could they not smell anything??? Hmmmmm.... something about this story doesn't smell right (no pun intended). That means they had been dead for about over a week. I'm not sure how long it takes for a corpse to sink but, considering there were about 5 bodies, I think a week would be plenty of time to start to smell. This is just strange.
