Indicted Texas Congressman Tom DeLay wrote his constituents and contributors Thursday to rail against Democrats.
The Republican from Sugar Land criticized Democrats for engaging in what he calls "the politics of personal destruction."
"What we're fighting is so much larger than a single court case or a single district attorney in Travis County. We are witnessing the criminalization of conservative politics,” he wrote.
DeLay is named in indictments returned by Travis County grand juries charging conspiracy and money laundering in an alleged scheme to funnel corporate donations to Republican candidates for the Texas Legislature in 2002.
He stepped down as U.S. House Majority Leader after he was indicted.
DeLay say’s he’s innocent.
"Just because a rogue Democratic prosecutor doesn't agree with some political tactics doesn't make them illegal or even wrong. He has an opinion, but he doesn't make the law," the letter said.
DeLay is seeking to have a judge removed because of his Democratic political activity and says Travis County District Attorney Ronnie Earle has engaged in prosecutorial misconduct.
Earle has declined comment on DeLay's repeated attacks.
The prosecutor earlier denied that the case involves politics.
Thursday’s letter was prepared for the Fort Bend County Republican Party newsletter, plus for an e-mail list of about 2,000 households in the area.
