(May 28, 2008)—The search for escaped McLennan County Jail trusty Marc Hirst, 32, intensified late Wednesday afternoon after deputies discovered a suitcase that the inmate may have taken along with clothing, a shotgun and ammunition in a late-night break-in in the Mart area.

Authorities say Hirst broke into a home around midnight in the Battle Lake area.

They were bringing in a K-9 team as well as a horse patrol Wednesday evening as they concentrated the search in the area where the suitcase was recovered.

Authorities believe Hirst is now wearing a blue or black long-sleeve shirt and khaki cargo pants and may be armed with a sawed-off shotgun.
He also took both buckshot and birdshot.
Hirst, doffed his uniform and fled from a work detail at the Precinct 2 work barn Tuesday morning clad only in his boxer shorts.

Hirst was last seen running across the Battle Lake golf course, Tuesday.

He managed to elude authorities throughout the night.

Earlier Wednesday, deputies were conducting a house-to-house search for the escaped inmate and Sheriff Larry Lynch said the manhunt would continue until Hirst is found or until it’s clear he’s no longer in the area.

Patriot you're a trip!! LOL

Posted by: Tamara Location: Waco on May 29, 2008 at 11:59 AM
Patriot, you are so funny, Gloria is probably writing from a Federal Prison right now you know they have computers now and an email account(talk about the good life). I also agree with you Donald, if it wasn't for traffic stops, drug busts or someone calling the police to the scene then the jails would be very empty!

HEY GLORIA! MAYBE HE WILL SHOW UP AT YOUR DOOR! YOU ARE WHY THINGS ARE THE WAY THEY ARE ... YOU AND MILLIONS OF OTHERS ..... FEEL IT?

Posted by: PM Location: Gville on May 29, 2008 at 09:54 AM
Well, Gloria, since you feel that way maybe he will break in to your house next!

Posted by: Spencer Location: Mart on May 29, 2008 at 09:19 AM
how we gonna know when they caught this dude?

Posted by: Patriot Location: Tx on May 29, 2008 at 09:11 AM
What Gloria?? Are you on MARS this morning or high on drugs?? This so called inmate "trusty" (noun.. for you webster folks), BROKE INTO A HOME A STOLE A SAWED OFF SHOTGUN WITH AMMO. Yeah, that makes him dangerous!! Criminals shouldn't be considered "trusty"... (adverb---LOL). Sounds like you've been in jail before lady. My guess.. it was drugs. Gloria, I think you need more jail time for stupidity!

Posted by: gloria Location: waco on May 29, 2008 at 07:10 AM
So police say he has a gun? Is that there excuse to shoot and kill? Leave him alone the jails are full to the max anyway. Besides they lock you up for anything now days I say RUN FORREST RUN.

So we can't catch this fugitive, and we can't catch Bin Laden, But we can catch someone who is not paying thier taxes.

Posted by: Heather Location: Waco on May 28, 2008 at 10:07 PM
What was he in jail for anyway?

There have been so many typos/inconsistencies in this story. Some stations are reporting that this is all going on in Hallsburg, ect. And they're searching maybe four square miles. My Mother lives less than a mile from the Golf Course, and she said they're not moving from this small area where they think he is because they've found a suitcase he stole from the house last night there. The suitcase is said to actually be headed back towards where he escaped from, so logically, it sounds like he's headed toward our little town of Mart. But not a single cop has been seen in town, or outside of that four square miles. And the door to door search is false. There aren't that many houses along the road, and we know quite a few of the people living in the houses along Battle Lake Road. None of them have been searched, nor has anyone even come to where my parents live. Between my Dad and a friend of his, they have about 100acres, and the old railroad runs along the properties. Come on coppers!

Nope they haven't caught him yet and they probably won't..

Posted by: Anonymous Location: Mart on May 28, 2008 at 03:36 PM
Have they found him yet!

Posted by: hmmm Location: Waco on May 28, 2008 at 02:00 PM
Trusty is actually correct according to dictionary.com - trust·y [truhs-tee] adjective, trust·i·er, trust·i·est, noun, plural trust·ies. –adjective 1. able to be trusted or relied on; trustworthy; reliable. 2. Archaic. trustful. –noun 3. a person or thing that is trusted. 4. a well-behaved and trustworthy convict to whom special privileges are granted.

Why didn't they shoot him as they saw him running off into the woods in his underwear?

Was this their way of helping the overcrowded situation? It doesn't ever surprise me when this county is in the news. They are always sweeping things under the rug! This place is very unprofessional! You ever hear of the show Flamingo Road? Haha!

Didn't anyone learn from Dukakis when he let out those "Trusties" out and one raped and killed a girl? The only time that a person that is incarcerated is released is when they are paroled.

Posted by: Tamara Location: Waco on May 28, 2008 at 08:26 AM
FYI- Patriot had it right he meant "trusty," if you don't get it then you won't!

In '06 the Texas Jail Commission reported 7 escapes and we never heard anything about it. See http://mclennan-county.com/TCJS.htm. If the media is reporting it perhaps we are making progress. The sheriff even went so far as to tell the Attorney General that he could not release informaiton about escapees because it would compromise the investigation. This site (http://mclennan-county.com/links.htm) has links to information on the County owned detention facility where Sherman Lamont Fields escaped and killed the mother of two small children. It's a private facility and the "sheriff" doesn't have anyhting to do with it. He just receives $12,000 a year from the company running it. I filed an open records request and this is not the only person at large who is supposed to be in custody.

It seems that someone at the jail facility wasn't doing their job.

I agree with hahahah; there are a few typos in this story. First of all the inmate escaped on Tuesday morning and is still on the run Tuesday evening; it is not Wednesday yet. Second, it is Battle Lake Golf Course, not Battle Creek Golf Course. These details are pretty important and should be reported correctly.

looser, even in jail, looser

Posted by: hahahah Location: waco on May 27, 2008 at 08:21 PM

Posted by: Sunny Location: Belton on May 27, 2008 at 07:48 PM
Ha! I at least understand the play on words, no I suppose he wasn't a very "trusty" Trustee. Very clever!

Posted by: Anonymous Location: Waco on May 27, 2008 at 04:21 PM
Is this still going on?

Posted by: FYI Location: waco on May 27, 2008 at 02:57 PM
It's trustee, not trusty!

Posted by: Patriot Location: Tx on May 27, 2008 at 02:26 PM
Let's bring back the old chain and stop this nonsense. He wasn't too "trusty" was he?

Posted by: susiebw Location: kempner on May 27, 2008 at 01:50 PM
As many people as run around town in their pajamas and boxers, he is not going to stand out.
