(May 27, 2008)—A massive sign in front of the Waco Police Department makes it clear the department is looking for new officers.
One of the reasons for the big “help wanted” sign is that there are 50 officers who are now eligible for retirement.
Waco police recruiter Babe Torres doesn't expect them all to retire at once but he knows if they wanted to, they could.
"If a lot these officers decide here within a two year span to go ahead and leave then we're going to be in a hole as far as officers on the street," Torres said.
The department has four more recruits training in the academy now and they're expected to graduate this summer.
But more recruits are needed.
The department spent less than $10,000 on recruiting ads last year, but that budget wasn’t enough to recruit outside of Texas.
Now recruiters are trying to find "home-grown" officers in the future, by encouraging students to become police officers when they get older.
