(May 28, 2008)—The lone toilet on the International Space Station is broken and the three-man crew is counting the hours until the shuttle Discovery arrives next week with repair parts.

The crewmembers are making do with a jury-rigged system when they need to urinate.

NASA says the crew has used the toilet on the Soyuz return capsule, but it has a limited capacity, so they are now using a back-up bag-like collection system that can be connected to the broken toilet.

"Like any home anywhere the importance of having a working bathroom is obvious,” a NASA spokesman said.
