Rev. Kyle Lake, the pastor of Waco’s University Baptist Church, died Sunday morning in a freak accident during a baptism as his congregation looked on in horror.
Lake was in the process of baptizing a woman at about 10:30 a.m. Sunday at the church at South 17th Street and Dutton Avenue when a microphone fell in the baptismal.
Lake went into cardiac arrest and was confirmed dead at about 11:30 a.m.
The woman, whose name was not released, was not injured in the accident.
The service was suspended as paramedics were called, but efforts to revive Lake were unsuccessful.
A memorial service will be held at 8 p.m. Sunday at First Baptist Church of Waco at South 5th Street and Clay Avenue. Counselors will be on hand during the service.
Funeral services for Lake are pending.
“Not only did we lose a pastor but we've lost our friend,” the church said in a posting on its Web site.
