Students from Waco’s Methodist Children’s Home and residents of Quality Care of Waco will hold a memorial service Wednesday for civil rights pioneer Rosa Parks.
Parks died Oct. 24 at her home in Detroit at the age of 92.
Her refusal to give up her seat to a white man on a city bus in 1955 in Montgomery, Ala. served as a catalyst for the civil rights movement.
Parks’ arrest on Dec. 1, 1955 triggered a 381-day boycott of the bus system organized by a then little-known Baptist minister, Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. who later earned the Nobel Peace Prize for his work.
“The importance of what she did less than half a century ago really became clear to me recently,” said Quality Care activity coordinator Eric Johnson.
“It’s important to recognize that through the courage of one person an entire society can change. I’m excited about this opportunity to celebrate her life.”
Methodist Home students volunteer weekly at Quality Care and worked with residents to plan and prepare for the memorial event.
