A jury of four officers and four enlisted soldiers was picked Thursday at Fort Bliss for the court-martial of a reservist accused of abusing Afghan detainees.
Sgt. Duane M. Grubb has pleaded not guilty to assault, maltreatment and making a false official statement in an alleged attack on a detainee at a detention center in Afghanistan.
Grubb's the sixth reservist from the Cincinnati-based 377th Military Police Company to go before a Fort Bliss court-martial for alleged Afghan detainee abuse.
The detainee, Zarif Khan, exhibited such bizarre behavior that soldiers dubbed him "Timmy" after a mentally retarded character on the cartoon "South Park."
Military investigators say Khan was the victim of physical abuse from soldiers.
Investigators say Grubb hit Khan at least one time in November 2002, and then lied about it.
Prosecutors in another case said during an unrelated hearing Tuesday that Khan has been released from American custody and can't be located.
The abuse investigation came after two other detainees died at the Bagram Airfield facility in 2002.
