(June 2, 2008)--A Marine sergeant from El Paso accused of bringing an AK-47 assault rifle home from Iraq as a war trophy has accepted a plea deal that will keep him out of federal prison.
Sgt. Leonardo San Juan agreed Monday to plead guilty to one felony count of possession of an unregistered firearm and to pay a $100 fine, said his attorney, Joseph Low.
Low and prosecutors reached the deal shortly before jury selection was set to begin.
A judge still must approve the deal.

How is that a good deal for him? He will never be able to get a good job with a felony charge. This is pretty stupid. I am so sick of soldiers being sent to war for back to back tours and then being treated like criminals when they get home.

I don't know Marine laws and could care less. What I do want to know is why in the world would it be that horrible for a soldier to bring his rifle home? Come on, federal prison? I am sure that gun was his best friend for quite some time. Just be glad the man made it home safe instead of in a body bag. I think there are way more issues that need to be addressed that are more important where this war is concerned.
