Authorities around the state remained on the lookout Friday for a Texas death row inmate who walked out of the Harris County jail wearing the street clothes he wore for his last court appearance.
Harris County Sheriff's Lt. John Martin said Thompson had smuggled the civilian clothing back to his cell.
Thompson was in Houston because an appeals court threw out his death sentence for the 1998 slayings of his ex-girlfriend and her new boyfriend.
The shooting victims were Dennise Hayslip and Darren Keith Cain.
Last Friday, a jury re-sentenced Thompson to execution.
He had yet to be returned to the state prison system.
Martin says Thompson changed from his orange inmate's jumpsuit into civilian clothes Thursday, flashed a fake ID with his photo on it and left.
Thompson, who got out of his handcuffs, falsely claimed to be with the Texas attorney general's office.
He escaped a short time after meeting with a visitor, who has not been identified, but whom authorities are questioning.
