(June 3, 2008)--Two Edinburg men escaped injury Tuesday when they jumped from a low section of the Queen Isabella Memorial Causeway, the two-mile long bridge that connects South Padre Island to the Texas mainland.

The crew of a Coast Guard ship fished the 25-year-old and 26-year-old, whose identities have not been released, from the water.

Petty Officer David Cantu says one of the men told authorities he'd just been diagnosed HIV positive, but officials aren't sure if that was the reason for the jump.

Part of the towering causeway fell in September 2001 after some barges hit it.

Eight motorists were killed in that bridge accident.
