(June 5, 2008)--More than 30,000 Texas electricity customers have been forced into a state backup program in recent weeks after their retail providers defaulted on payments to the operator
of the state's largest power grid.

The latest provider was Denton-based Etricity.

The Electric Reliability Council of Texas says it switched about 12,220 Etricity residential customers into the provider-of-last-resort program.

Two other companies, Pre-Buy Electric LLC and National Power Company, also stopped serving about 24,000 customers in the last couple of weeks.

ERCOT operates the grid for most of the state.

While those customers may have to pay higher prices until they sign with a new provider, at least their power won’t be turned off as Texas heats up for the summer.

A company fails to have good business practices and goes under, and now ya'll think de-regulation is awful. Holy cow, now they have to make a phone call and pick a new provider which takes not much more than a few minutes. No service interuption, plus a chance to maybe SAVE some money by doing a little research and going with a lower cost provider. Or pay a little more and go with a "green" provider. Choice, yeah, it sure is awful.

Deregulation is a fraud. Public utilities should have never been degregulated. It has allowed fly-by-night companies to come in, take your money, not pay their bills and cut and run. I had a new "electric provider" show up on my doorstep yesterday, and I basically told him to go away and don't come back. Banks should have never been deregulated. It has allowed them to rip off the average consumer with mafia-style interest rates and ridiculous surcharges. The airline industry is another deregulated ripoff. Once they were profitable under regulation. Now they are all broke. There is no such thing as deregulation where the good of the entire public is at stake. It is just an excuse to allow more ripoff artists to come into the picture.

Texas should have stayed regulated. Now, it's "Open Range" for all competitors and the competition for our business......And lots of folks wanted Texas deregulated... Mainly I remember this happening as I worked for a local freight company for 14 yrs and they like others were controlled by the Railroad Commission and not all the carriers were allowed to pick up & deliver freight within the state of Texas even though they had a terminal in Tx. Ex - Waco, TX to Dallas, TX but they could ship from Waco to another state........So, now we all pay for deregulation......thanks again to all the complainers in this world that make those of us suffer because of their complaints...........

This is the price Texas must pay for deregulation. It is going to cost everyone in the long run. The telephone market is the same way. I would love to have AT&T phone service, but I've been told I can ONLY HAVE EMBARQ, because I am in "their" territory. What??? The phone companies were deregulated to boost competition. How will that effect me if I can't get service from one of the competing companies???
