(June 9, 2008)—The FBI is joining the investigation after a weekend police chase that started in Central Texas and ended south of Austin led to the discovery of weapons and explosives in the vehicle and home of a Morgan’s Point man who shot himself as officers approached him early Saturday morning.

Nathan Gibson, 48, remained in Brackenridge Hospital in Austin Monday, but authorities said he’s expected to survive.

The chase started around 1:45 a.m. Saturday when Morgan’s Point police spotted a suspicious vehicle near fuel tanks at Morgan’s Point Marina, where a children’s fishing event was scheduled later that morning.

The driver of the late model Mustang sped off as officers approached.

Police gave chase and the pursuit wound through neighborhoods in Temple, along State Highway 317 into Belton, then onto Southbound Interstate 35 through Williamson County and Travis County.

Belton Police, State Troopers and Williamson County and Travis County deputies were all involved in the chase, which finally ended when the man crashed the car south of Austin.

Police say he shot himself in the face as officers approached the wrecked car.

The Austin Bomb Squad was called to the scene after explosives, ammunition and weapons were found in the vehicle and dismantled the devices.

Fort Hood’s Explosive Ordinance Detachment Team was dispatched to the man’s residence at 16 Hawthorne Court in Morgan's Point at about 6:15 a.m. Saturday.

Nearly 60 homes were evacuated in the area including those of several medically challenged and elderly residents.

The United States Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms dispatched a field agent, a bomb tech and a bomb-detecting dog to the scene.

Authorities recovered what they said were materials for making pipe bombs.

The FBI asked that the affidavit submitted for the search warrant and the search warrant be sealed.

Gibson had reportedly lived in the residence for the last 18 months and police said he had had verbal altercations with neighbors, the most recent about a week-and-a-half ago.

Kudos to all the agencies involved in getting a possible "killer" off the streets. Sounds like he definitely had a plan for something bad to happen. Hopefully, he will be considered a threat to society and be put away for a lifetime. Too bad he did not aim the gun at himself very well, we might all be better off having him 6 feet under. TEXAS has zero tolerance for these kinds of idiots.
