Jazz clarinetist Willie Lewis was born 93 years ago today in Cleburne. He went on to become the first black expatriate jazz-band leader in Europe. Among the musicians who played under him were Herman Chittison, Benny Carter, Bill Coleman, Garnet Clark, Bobby Marin and June Cole. Lewis, who grew up in Dallas, enjoyed success in Europe through the 1930s, but in 1941 returned to New York City, where his fortunes declined. He died in 1971.

Israeli helicopters fired missiles at a car carrying Abdel Aziz Rantisi, a senior Hamas leader, wounding him and killing two others. (Israel succeeded in killing Rantisi in April 2004.) ImClone chief Sam Waksal was sentenced to more than seven years in prison in connection with a stock-trading scandal. A rocket holding the first of two Mars rovers, Spirit, blasted off from Cape Canaveral, Florida. (Spirit arrived on Mars in January 2004.) Former treasury secretary and White House chief of staff Donald T. Regan died in Williamsburg, Virginia, at age 84.
