(June 11, 2008)—Bobby Cox, 61, of Gatesville died Tuesday in a fiery crash involving three 18-wheelers and a pickup truck on Highway 6 south of Calvert.

The accident occurred Tuesday when an 18-wheeler driven by Ronnie Bernard, 38, crossed the centerline of the highway, clipped a second rig and then hit a third 18-wheeler head on.

The driver of a pickup that was following the two big rigs couldn’t avoid the collision.

Three of the trucks burst into flames.

Bernard was taken by ambulance to Scott & White Hospital in Temple, where he was in the intensive care unit.

Alejandro Trejo, 37, of Houston, who was driving the pickup truck, was taken to Parkland Hospital in Dallas in critical condition.

Harold Crost, 58, of Dallas who was driving another of the 18-wheelers was not injured.

“This is the worst one we’ve had on Texas 6 in this year this year,” Department of Public Safety Trooper Eddie Carmon said.

Witnesses said the 18-wheeler that crossed the centerline was weaving in and out of its lane and may have had a blowout, but investigators said that could be hard to confirm because of the damage from the fire.
