Firefighters Rescue Man Attacked By Bee Swarm Save Email Print

A | A | A

(June 12, 2008)—Waco firefighters used a stream of foam and water from a high-pressure hose to rescue a man who was attacked by a swarm of bees Thursday morning as he mowed an overgrown lot.

The man, whose name was not immediately released, evidently struck a hive as he used a tractor to and shredder to mow the lot, at the intersection of Highway 6 and West Waco Drive near the Foxworth-Galbraith Building Materials Center.

As the bees attacked, Connie Joe Allen jumped off the tractor and attempted to escape, but got only about 30 feet before the bees covered him.

He collapsed, covered with bees.

Two Foxworth-Galbraith workers saw him, but because of the bees could not reach him.

When emergency crews arrived, the man was lying on his back with a ball cap on his face, covered with thousands of bees, a witness said.

Despite the attack, the man was conscious and talking and was able, with assistance, to rise to his feet and walk to a nearby ambulance as a firefighter directed a stream of water and foam on him and other firefighters.

He was taken to Providence Health Center in Waco.

Information about his condition was not immediately available.

No Name, the same thing happened to my daughter (5 years old at the time) at a baseball game. She picked up her soda, took a drink, and spit out a bee. She got stung under her tongue. It took three of us holding her down to get the stinger out. Now everyone we know looks in their can before they drink. Fortunately she wasn't allergic but that didn't mean much to her. All she knew was that her tongue hurt soooo bad she was uncontrollable. Glad the guy was able to get up and walk to the ambulance, could've been a whole lot worse.

I am in charge of a facility that had a nest of bees in our tool shed. Those bees ran off a Groundskeeper mowing a yard behind us. I locked down the tool shed and gave explicit instructions for clients and staff to NOT go in the shed until the bee problem was resolved. To Laura: I am so, so, sorry about your dog and I am so, so, sorry about anyone that encountered those horrible, horrible, murderous killer bees. May God comfort the man in this story.

Lots of children are at pools now or outdoors. A friend's child reached for her soda pop and a bee was in the can and stung her in the roof of her mouth. She was allergic to bees but her mother had the medicene right there and the EMT's got to her in time to save her life.

To Laura Location: Harker Heights on Jun 12, 2008 at 01:02 PM, I am sorry to hear about the tragedy with your dog. I hope that now he's somehow in a nice green field chasing rabbits or curled up on some heavenly floor gnawing on a rawhide : (

I sure hope he'll be ok. I certainly feel his pain as I was attacked by a swarm of bumble bees after my horse landed in their nest while penning cattle about 12 yrs ago. This is a miserable experience for anyone to endure. I pray he won't be sick after this. God Bless him.

That happened to me a few years ago while I was shredding down at the Lampasas River in Kempner. They attack so fast and in such great numbers, you immediately become overwhelmed. I was stung so many times that after running down the bank of the river to escape, I had severe trouble breathing and nearly passed out (before calling 911). 5 fire trucks and 2 ambulances showed up and EVERYONE got stung. If you encounter a hive, RUN! If they sense your CO2, they will all attack the source of that CO2 or will become enraged if they sense vibrations.

My dog was killed yesterday by those bees. Me and my children tried to rescue him but couldn't because of the huge swarm of bees. We had to watch helplessly as the dog died in front of us. A beekeeper later came out and found the hive and sprayed and identified them as the Africanized bee or killer bees as we know them. My children are teenages, but I can't even imagine what would happen if my dog had been a small child.

Poor guy! Glad he's ok because this surely could have been fatal. It doesn't say if they were Africanized Bees but it sounds like it was. They're so aggressive and will chase you.
