Mother Who Killed Infant Wants Out Of Texas Mental Hospital Save Email Print

(June 13, 2008)—A North Texas woman who cut off her 10-month-old daughter's arms in 2004 has told a judge she's ready to leave a state mental hospital.

Dena Schlosser requested a new hearing this month in a letter to state District Judge Chris Oldner.

The judge found the Plano mother not guilty by reason of insanity in her 2006 murder trial.

Schlosser wrote that she believes her "current mental health needs can be adequately met by community services."

She says she's no longer in need of institutionalized care.

Her attorney, David Haynes, told The Dallas Morning News that it's unlikely the judge will grant an additional hearing.

Schlosser is held at the Rusk State Hospital.

She was arrested in 2004 after police found her soaked in blood, holding a kitchen knife and listening to a hymn as her daughter, Maggie, lay dying in her crib.

to GrannyGray....How would you feel if you were the survivior of rape and were forced to carry and deliver a baby that was the product of said rape? Though the baby is innocent the act behind the conception wasnt and it is a hard road to be MADE to go down. How would you feel if you were molested by your father and were forced to carry the product of years of incest? I agree that there are abortions done in this country due to women being careless and having unprotected sex just for fun.Personally I am against abortion, but that is MY choice and it is also MY choice to make. You have to also look at the big picture. There are many women in this country who seek out abortion for tragic reasons also. We have too many children in the adoption system now that cant find homes. You and all of your pro-life pals have been jumping from story to story mounting your soapbox against abortion. Please find another venue, this one isnt listening anymore. Your diatribes are getting a bit old.

Granny is so right. When we as a country legally condone the murdering of innocent babies before they're born - it carries over to disregard for life of innocent babies after they're born. True, some may go to back ally quacks, but better a few butchered then millions upon millions! ChiChi if you're going to quote the Bible then quote the commandment that says you shall not murder. Simply stating the obvious about murdering innocent babies is not judging anyone. It is a warning of what God says in His Word. This is my country and it is in obeying God and His Word that our country will find peace and blessing again and put an end to all this crazyness.

Right. So because she says she is fine, our systems let her decide if she wants to request a hearing. I dont get it. She murdered her baby and she is "OK" now, ok to leave and institute where she needs to stay cause she is mentaly ill. Even if she was "Feeling" better she needs to be put to death. That poor child did not deserve what happened. Yup chop her arms off we dont care.

To GRANNYGRAY: do you honestly think that our country is the only one??? Do you know what happens when someone wants an abortion and goes to a "back street quack"? Read some of the history...butchery happened...not just to the fetus...but to the mother...many died...and the BIBLE says: MATTHEW 7:1 & 2: JUDGE NOT, THAT YE BE NOT JUDGED. IT ALSO STATES "TO OBEY THE LAW OF THE LAND". Is this not your land? If not, go back to your native land and live there.

So the baby killer is no longer insane? No problem, put her in a death row cell where she needs to be. And what gives her the right to dictate to the world that she is now "FINE"? OMG she is crazy, I could never imagine hurting my daughters like that. I can barely stand to here them cry let alone scream. I wonder how she could have just sa there and did that and listened to that baby scream and cry let alone bleed to death. It makes me want to cry just thinking about how that baby sounded while that crazy women did that to her

She was found guilty by reason of insanity, so she can't be retried. However, the likelyhood of her getting out of the institution after only 2 years is almost nil. What's scary in this situation is that she believes she's been cured. Most people, when they have been cured, have an overwhelming sense of guilt. One would think she would want to stay where she was for fear of having another psychotic episode and doing it again. I hope her attorney is right in believing that the judge won't even grant the hearing.

I have never commented on here before,,,but I am now.I can not even believe that anybody is listening to her. I agree with everyone here, If she dosnt need to be there then she belong in prison.There is no way after a few years she is ready for anything after what she has done. Please I pray they dont let her go.....

There should be no more Not Guilty by reason of Insanity, It should be GUILTY by reason of insanity and when they are out of the hospital because they are well enough its on to Death row or Life in Prison NO parole. Leave her Arse in the mental ward she is Delusional.

I don't understand why any crime against a child is anything less than death. If u can hurt an innocent child u don't belong in society. I'm a mother and I wouldn't even want to be let out if I hurt my child (impossible he's my life)but just kill me. I would never be able to live with myself. I agree with anonymous she's freakin crazy why is ANYBODY listening to her?!

this is awful. i remember that story now. i cant believe she has the nerve to ask to get out. people like her dont deserve rights/appeals/everything else they ask for. the state should go ahead and execute her.

If this monster is no longer in need of mental treatment, then she should be able to stand trial. Regardless if she is "better" or not, that baby is still dead. Let's cut her arms off and listen to hymns and see if she thinks it matters if we are "better" or not. Then we can leave her out in the woods and let nature do the rest. Don't give her the needle, that's too humane.

I agree with Jessie! Actually, Let's leave her in the hospital!! It's got to be tourture to be suposedly "sane" in a mental institiution! Leave her there! Let her sit there and think about what she did for the rest of her life!!! Her daughter didn't get a choice, so why does she deserve one? Because she is now "no longer in need of institutionalized care". Give me a Break!!

She deserves to have both of her arms taken off with the same knife she used on her daughter and let everyone watch her die while they all sing the same hymn she was singing. I have no sympathy for what she's done. She needs to rot in hell. Although that's my opinion and I'm not the final judge in her actions.........I guess it's good that I'm NOT her judge at all. May her daughter rest in peace for eternity.

I remember this incident very clearly b/c my son was only a few months old when it happened. I felt so horrible for this sweet little baby, who's mother, practically sawed her arms off and left her to bleed to death. No, she does not deserve to get out of a mental hospital, she deserves to have her arms sawed off in the same manner and left for the coyotes. I have no sympathy whatsoever for this woman.

I agree with Shocked, now that her "insanity" has suddenly been taken care of, she needs to sit in prison for the rest of her life so she can think daily about what she did to her own daughter. Don't let her out into the free world where her "insanity" may all of a sudden come back and then she is at liberty to hurt someone else or their kids for that matter!!
