Major Accident Leaves Four Injured, One Dead Save Email Print

A | A | A

(June 13, 2008)—A collision between a jeep and a bobtail truck early Friday afternoon in Killeen left four people injured and one man dead.

All five of the injured were riding in the jeep, which flipped after it was cut off by another vehicle and then was struck by the bobtail truck on eastbound U.S. 190 near the Killeen Hobby Lobby store.

Four of the jeep’s occupants were ejected.

One man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The injured victims were taken to hospitals in Temple and on Fort Hood.

Traffic backed up Friday afternoon, as police closed the eastbound lanes of the highway because of the accident.

No your right it does not have to happen but someone HAS to blame for it otherwise it would not be an accedent? Someone being STUPID caused this other person to get hurt or dead and if they were not being STUPID then there would be no reason to point fingers could no one would be hurt?

I just can't understand why people feel it necessary to BLAME other people for an accident, because it is just THAT! An accident. Everything happens for a reason and people just need to learn to accept that. Death, no matter how tragic, is a part of life. And it definitely is saddening. And there is NO sense in blaming others and pointing fingers. It doesn't make it ANY easier on ANYONE!! My condolences go out to ALL the families of the victims, and I hope that the driver of the black car involved finds the strength to admit to this crime.

I agree with Anonymous on June 16, 2008 at 11:46am. We need to stop the blame and pray for all involved. It was a tragic accident. T. my love, thoughts and prayers are with you. AC

we need to ride on two lanes to avoid this.. I've tried it, it works!! they will slow down and think twice...lol

Posted by: Anonymous on Jun 16, 2008 at 11:46 AM
For EVERYONE!!! The driver and the passenger in front DID have their seat belts on! And I ask with great sorrow, Please stop the anger and blame and please send your thoughts and prayers out to ALL of these brave young men! Just for one moment imagine the pain the driver of the jeep feels. Prayer for them ALL!

MR. TRUCKDRIVER....you did nothing wrong. Your comment, along with many others on this accident, put tears in my eyes. I pray that the driver of the black car comes forth and helps with the investigation. To the victims/truck driver, may GOD give you all strength to get through this difficult time. Alan, is now an angel that will help you deal with this. I cannot imagine your pain. GOD BLESS all of you.

I'm so sorry to hear about this accident. I was in Iraq with these people. I pray for their families. The coward who drove from the scene, you don't know the pain that you put on the family and friends of these individuals. RIP Alan

Anonymous on June 15,2008 at 1:01 PM. And that is why we will see you someday on the news for not wearing a seat belt. Good Bless all in the story.

This has been a most unfortunate event. My dear friend now lays in the trauma center due to this accident. To the family who lost their loved one, I am so sorry for your loss. Please always remember Alan is a hero, he served our country while many others coward from the responsibility. My prayers are with you as they are with my friend who we hope can recover from his many injury's. To the man driving the truck, this was not your fault by any means and I pray you find the strength to carry on.

To Anonyomous, Texas Laws are not for anyone to "choose" to obey. If you don't enforce any front seat passenger to buckle up and they're hurt or killed in a accident and you're driving, you can be sued. Read Texas DPS website --- Sec. 545.413. Safety Belts; Offense. ( a ) 1-4.-----http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/director_staff/public_information/seatbelt.htm#SafetyBelts------ I always hate to hear about these accidents. But with Ft. Hood being one of the biggest military bases in the country, the chances are (just as high), that the driver of black car was "another soldier" than a civilian. So Anonymous, if you get hurt or get passengers killed, you have no one to blame but yourself. NEXT TIME IT COULD BE YOU AND YOU MIGHT BE THE ONE KILLED. To Jr...it wasn't your fault, please don't blame yourself.

Sinclair, thanks for your kind words. My brother-in-law is there now with his son and helping him through this tough time. To the man who was driving the truck...I'm so sorry that you had to be a part of this tragedy. I hope you are a man of faith (whatever that faith is) and know that we are part of a bigger plan. God alone is in control. If anyone thinks they are in control of their destiny they better think again! I hope you can find peace that Alan is in a better place with no pain, no heartache, no traffic that is out of control! You did nothing wrong and are a good person. I'm sure these boys' families are glad you were there to say a prayer for them.

It is sad to see another person as a human being die for something stupid. As a civilian living in killeen/ ft hood, the population in this town has gotten larger and killeen roads are not big enough for these people. the city waits to the last min to change the roads. yes they come back from the war over there but its like dealing with a war here cause of all the caos too. killeen has more crazy drivers and hoodlums. wish we all could just stop and relize whats goin on and slow down on the roads, and stop robbing people. Life is short and we should just take our time. ANYWHO im sorry for the loss of a person. my prayers to the family. TO the jack who cut the jeep off, do the right thing. TURN YOURSELF IN. admit what you did was wrong. you should of stopped.

Posted by: Myself Location: Central Texas on Jun 15, 2008 at 08:37 AM
There were 5 people in one jeep and only the driver had a seatbelt on? It's the LAW in Texas that "anyone" sitting in the front of the vehicle must wear seatbelts. Had the police seen the jeep before the accident, the driver would have been pulled over and ticketed for not having his front seat passenger(s) buckled up. Too many here are in a big hurry and will cut you off, speed through red lights and don't even get me started about people on talking on the hand held cell phones while driving. Drivers are inconsiderate, don't pay attention and along with road rage, it's a deadly combination. I agree with Frank, that you can't change the attitude of reckless drivers out there without greater traffic enforcement by the police. Until then, drive safely and buckle up everyone in your vehicle. That's what they are there for and they DO SAVE LIVES. Maybe when the construction is complete things might get a little better, but I'm not counting on it.

BARB! im so so so sorry to hear about what had happen to your nephew and everyone else in the car! I was a good friend of the passanger that had died, it brakes my heart he was such a good man and a good friend to my husband. Im glad to hear your nephews test came back good. I wish him the best of luck and hopefully will be seeing him very soon!! I believe ill be goin down there for everything, as soon as I can. He is definately in my prayers along with the other men. They will pull through I know it they are all very strong, and have been through alot and seen alot. More then we prob. will see are whole life. FEMALE, I agree with you the person who caused the accident I hope they never sleep again knowing they caused a death, and 4 other harmful injurys that they might never recover from. I hope someone will give the police a lead and they bring them to justice, and punish them to the fullest extent of the law!!!

Posted by: Female Location: Killeen on Jun 14, 2008 at 10:08 PM
It really doesn't matter if he was the person talking on the phone. If a vehicle cut him off then it is the person driving that vehicle's fault. People in Killeen do not know how to drive. I get cut off on a daily basis. I was also confronted by someone on a motorcyle who had cut me off to the point of pushing me off the road so that I would not hit him. He thought he was going to come after me by turning his bike off and walked up to my vehicle. As we say Road Rage and idiots on the road with no respect for other drivers. People should take responsibility for their actions and this person should come forward and face it. I don't know how they can live with themselves knowing they caused someone to die. I was cought in this trafic and of course I was almost hit by an idiot driver not paying attention and who cut me off as I was trying to enter 190 from the access road in Heights in front of Wal-Mart he crossed 3 lanes, cut me off causing me to almost drive off the road to miss him

Posted by: Frank Location: Kempner on Jun 14, 2008 at 09:32 PM
Sorry that someone lost their life and others were injured. I have commented before on other posts concerning inconsiderate driving practices I have seen around the Ft Hood area. Commenting in this forum does not change the attitude of reckless drivers out there. We need greater traffic enforcement by the police. Too many people are driving like they are playing a video game and many others are like NASCAR "want-a-bees". I am tired of paying higher car insurance rates in Texas, because of these fools on the road and certainly don't like the risk they present to every other driver on the road, who obeys traffic laws and speed limits.

Posted by: Sinclair Location: CAPE COD on Jun 14, 2008 at 08:32 PM
CHARLENE HUNNY!!!! WHERE IN MY COMMENT DID I SAY HE WAS TALKING TO THE DRIVER??? CAUSE IM PRETTY SURE I DIDNT IF YOU WANNA GO BACK AND READ IT!!! THE PERSON MY HUSBAND WAS TALKING TO WAS THE PASSANGER. AND THE REASON I KNOW THIS IS CAUSE I TALKED TO THE DRIVER EARLIER TODAY, HE WAS THE ONLY ONE IN THE CAR WEARING A SEAT BELT. HE TOLD ME THE WHOLE STORY ON HOW HE TRIED TO SAVE MY FRIEND AS HE (THE PASSANGER THE ONE MY HUSBNAD WAS TALKING TO) WAS LYING LIFE LESS ON HIM!!! SO UNLESS YOU KNOW ANYONE IN THE ACCIDENT SHUT YOUR MOUTH AND STOP POINTING FINGERS!!! AND I WOULDNT BE SURPRIZED IF YOU ARE THE PIECE OF SH*T IN THAT BLACK CAR AND CAUSED ALL THIS. ITS HARD ENOUGH THAT WE ARE TRYING TO DEAL WITH THIS. HE HAD GONE TO IRAQ AND BACK DODGING BOMBS, AND THIS IS HOW IT ENDED FOR HIM. HAVE SOME RESPECT! MY HUSBAND IS A GREAT MAN WHO ALSO WENT TO IRAQ! SO YOU CAN SLEEP SAFE AT NIGHT. HE WOULD NEVER DO ANYTHING TO PUT SOMEONE ELSE LIFE IN DANGER.

People on the road have no respect for other drivers everyone is in such a hurry and ignor everyone else on the road. I was in 2 accidents in less than a year because of people on their cell phones not paying attention. I was at a stop light in the middle of the day and was hit from behind at 50 to 60 mph no wet road, no reason for this to have happened, Just some stupid idiots not paying attention. I was seriously injured and have aspinal injury that will bother me for the rest of my life. At least I am alive and can watch my children and grandchildren gorw up. I have been cut off buy vehicles on a daily basis here in Killeen. I have been here for 17 years and it gets worse as time goes on. I was cought up in the trafic from this accident and of course I had another idot behind me and he almost hit me five times. If people would pay attention to what they do then we would not have to worry about deadly accidents like this one. My prayer's are with this family.

Posted by: Barb Location: Ohio on Jun 14, 2008 at 08:18 PM
No, he was talking to the man who DEID...not the driver! Blood alcohol came back 0.0. The person in the black vehicle never even stopped to see the chaos hecreated with his reckless driving. Speed was not a factor for the jeep as far as I know...so...that leaves a lot of questions for the person in the black vehicle. My nephew was driving this car...so I know the FACTS!

Posted by: anonymous on Jun 14, 2008 at 07:21 PM
Charlene....Where does it say that the person on the cell phone was the driver. Sinclair stated her husband was on the phone with the soldier that passed away when the accident happened. She didn't say he was the driver. I don't see that info in this article either. Did you see that info on another site?

Posted by: DC Location: Texas on Jun 14, 2008 at 06:32 PM
The driver was not on the phone the one who passed away was on the phone. Saying that the accident was because of the driver on the phone is not sorrect. The husband who was on the phone to them was talking to a passanger. Please dont read into things without knowing. R.I.P. Alan we all love you and you are missed

Posted by: anonymous on Jun 14, 2008 at 02:47 PM
Be careful what you say! The last comment said the driver that died was on the phone at the time. The driver wasn't the one that died - the driver wasn't on the phone - it was the passenger that died.We can ruin good names with inaccurate comments.

Posted by: lesley Location: cape cod on Jun 14, 2008 at 02:29 PM
Charlene why did you assume that the driver was talking on the phonewith out a hands free head, set then what your accusation be.we may never know what happened and he served in Iraq to come home and get killed here it is absolutly a travisty

Posted by: Charlene Location: Copperas Cove on Jun 14, 2008 at 12:44 PM
Just reading the comments sheds some interesting light on the accident. One person wrote that her husband was talking to the driver who died WHEN THE ACCIDENT HAPPENED ... that means it may not have been as much the guy in the black car's fault as it was inattention of the driver of the jeep. I'm sure the black car did have something to do with it but it was a combination of factors not just an inconsiderate driver. ALL of us need to slow down and be more careful when we're behind the wheel no matter what road we're on or where we're going. The people who were in this accident and their families and friends are in my prayers.

Posted by: Sharon Location: Harker Heights on Jun 14, 2008 at 09:53 AM
It seems to me that drivers have become very inconsiderate of other drivers. Although speed is often a factor, impatience is too. Nearly every day, I experience drivers making unsafe lane changes.

Posted by: gj Location: Killeen on Jun 14, 2008 at 08:44 AM
it is sad to say but people around here do not know how to drive has anyone seen the speed limit 60 i hate when i am driving and they are tail gaiting if u are in that much of a hurry catch a plane i have been here almost a year and have been hit 2 my heart goes out the people in this accident and my prayers go out to their families

Posted by: Cynthia Location: Killeen on Jun 14, 2008 at 08:21 AM
IF ANYBODY ACTUALLY WITNESSED THE ACCIDENT (and it appears from postings that some were actually very close when it happened) PLEASE CALL KILLEEN POLICE DEPT at (254) 526-8477. I travel 190 every single day & the number of drivers who don't care how their driving affects others ... well, it's very, very sad ... and, obviously very dangerous.

Posted by: Michelle Location: Central TX on Jun 14, 2008 at 07:59 AM
No where in the report does it say SPEED was a factor, it said the driver was cut off by another vehicle. It would be hard to believe that speed was not one of the factors for this wreck. I too drive from Nolanville to Copperas Cove on a daily basis and the reckless drivers that do speed and drive erratically pose a dangerous threat to us "regular" drivers. With all the construction going on, more police presence should be enforced. My prayers go out to all involved in the horrible accident. Please drive safe, put down the cell phones and let's arrive to our destinations in one piece! Does anyone know if the person who caused the accident stopped?

Posted by: Anonymous on Jun 14, 2008 at 07:02 AM
If you saw this accident please contact the police. They are looking for the black vehicle that caused the accident. My nephew was driving the jeep. Please help them find the person(s) who caused this accident!

Posted by: cw Location: killeen on Jun 14, 2008 at 04:14 AM
I just wish people would slow down. It is a shame how people just speed right past you. My son got a wake up call on day when he was traveling on I35 and some one cut the car in front of him off and flipped he was lucky that he didn't get involved but he stated this car had just speed past him. He stated he has slowed his speed down after helping to pull the people out of the vehicle that had flipped the car that caused the accident never even stopped he did get part of the plate I hope they find this person. He stated speed kills mom and I don't want a short life. I tell him all the time to be carefull he drives back and forth to temple everyday to work and drives home late at night from work. I pray the remainder of these people are ok god bless the family who lost their child.

Posted by: Redneck21b Location: Fort Hood on Jun 14, 2008 at 02:00 AM
The hero who died today was a DEAR friend of mine! like Lynn said life is to short. All I can ask right now is that everyone close to those five find peace and especially Alan's family. Anyone who was remotely close to that accident NEEDS to call the Killeen police dept. and tell them ANYTHING they may have seen. You can call them anonymously, just do the right thing. anything can help. If you didn't know it was a hit and run. A black vehicle. Any detail may help KPD solve this case and bring this COWARD to justice. RIP Alan!!!

Some people jusr dont need to talk like Tex from gatesville you would be sadeen if your people were in that car

Posted by: hb Location: killeen on Jun 13, 2008 at 10:39 PM
I go up & down this section of highway everyday due to my job. The speed limit is 60 & it's also a construction zone. Everyday people pass by me going way over the speed limit only to be next to me at an intersection somewhere down the road. I was caught in the traffic back-up caused by the accident & when my husband called to let me know what he had heard on the news, my heart hurt for all involved in that accident. My prayers go out to all of them.

Posted by: Sinclair Location: Cape Cod on Jun 13, 2008 at 09:20 PM
I love all these boys I was close with everyone of them!!!! My husband was on the phone with the soldier that had passed away when this accident happened....God Bless them all and hope everyone of you pulls through im coming down in a couple days for the funeral etc.

Posted by: jeff Location: bell on Jun 13, 2008 at 08:38 PM
I have only pulled 1 body out of a car and the person had his seat belt on. He was traveling at a fast speed and hit a bus head on. The belt was cut in the wreck. Be safe.

Posted by: Lynn Location: cove on Jun 13, 2008 at 08:21 PM
I only wish people would not be in such a huge hurry with everything else that is going on in the world life is already to short why do we want to be in a hurry to end it even quicker. My thoughts and prayers go out to their loved ones

Posted by: Jessia Location: Ft Hood on Jun 13, 2008 at 06:54 PM
If people would reduce there speed and use a freaking turn signal things like this may be avoidablt.

Posted by: Sheila Location: Killeen on Jun 13, 2008 at 06:14 PM
I was 2 to 3 cars behind when this accident occured. It was on the highway. It had nothing to do with the intersection. I knew it was bad but at the time I did not realize someone had actually died until now.

Posted by: tammy Location: killeen on Jun 13, 2008 at 04:41 PM
I am also not surprise by the accident, it is just sad that we are still driving at unsafe rates of speed. I wish everyone would slow down, there is not reason to get in a hurry. Where ever you are headed to will be there no matter how soon you will get there. Please let this be a reminder to everyone. Gas is already expensive enough, slow down, save a few gallons at the same time. My prayers also go to those invovled in the accident and their loved ones.

Posted by: Tex Location: Gatesville on Jun 13, 2008 at 04:24 PM
I thought this happened at the intersection, not on the highway.

Posted by: CDS Location: Killeen on Jun 13, 2008 at 04:16 PM
This also doesn't surprise me. I've been cut off numerous times. Sometimes I feel invisible.

Posted by: Lory Location: Cove on Jun 13, 2008 at 04:02 PM
I was on 190 just behind this accident today. The only word to describe it is: horrific. On my way back from Heights, I saw just how badly the Jeep was mangled. My prayers are with those involved.

Posted by: Redbird Location: Killeen on Jun 13, 2008 at 03:55 PM
Tex, you haven't been in Killeen for a long time. The accident happened on 190. Not the "Access" road. The exit ramp has been closed since November. The on ramp is slightly before this accident scene. On 190 there are only two lanes going east bound. Seat belts save lives. I know this.

Posted by: Tex Location: Gatesville on Jun 13, 2008 at 02:32 PM
Not surprised at all. That has to be the worst intersection in Killeen. People getting of the highway, cutting across four lanes of traffic to go to Target or Lowes. Sad but not really shocking. Only surprised that it doesn't happen more often.
