(June 17, 2008)--The Department of Public Safety issued a warning Tuesday, advising Texans to watch out for alarm system sales representatives and installers who might not have undergone the required criminal background checks.
DPS says residents should be sure they’re dealing with installers, sales representatives and companies that are licensed by the state.
“We urge anyone who is considering hiring an alarm company or installer to check whether they are actually licensed in Texas, as required by state law,” said Capt. RenEarl Bowie of the DPS Private Security Bureau.
“Alarm installers and salespersons are required to undergo a criminal background check before being licensed, to help ensure the safety of the public.”
The DPS Private Security Bureau is investigating in Houston and San Antonio in response to reports that unlicensed companies, sales representatives and companies are aggressively marketing their services and products, and the DPS says they may be turning up in other cities, as well.
