A Dallas police officer was in stable condition Sunday after being shot multiple times during an undercover investigation.

The officer, whose name was not released, was working in the Oak Cliff neighborhood investigating nearby burglaries of vehicles when he was shot, Dallas police Lt. Rick Watson told The Dallas Morning News for its online editions.

A man confronted the officer just after midnight and fired at least two rounds.

Watson says they're trying to figure out why the suspect confronted the officer.

The officer was being treated at Methodist Dallas Medical Center.

Police were uncertain whether the gunman knew that the man he shot was a police officer.
