Fort Hood Solider Killed in Motorcycle Accident. Save Email Print

A | A | A

(June 22, 2008)—Fort Hood Sgt. Oliver Laurence Jones, 35, died Saturday when he failed to negotiate a turn on his motorcycle while riding on FM 2484 in Bell County.

The Department of Public Safety said Sunday the motorcycle was traveling at a high rate of speed when it hit a culvert and went airborne.

As the bike came down, it struck a second culvert.

Jones was thrown from the motorcycle, which was catapulted into a tree.

Jones was pronounced dead at the scene at 5 p.m., about an hour after the accident.

Jones, of Columbia, S.C., had been assigned to the Warrior Transition Unit since November 2007.

He joined the Army in March 1999.

I personally don't know Sgt oliver jones, but I'm a fellow rider and soldier. That been around him, seen him and had a few rides with him. But never had the chance to get to know him like some. Sgt Oliver was many things to alot of people. He was a father, husband,a son,a friend, fellow rider and a fellow soldier. So on be half of all the people that's apart of 4ID, that is serving over in Iraq. Fellow rider and friends, we send our heart, love and prayers go out to the family. Sgt Jones will not go forgotten. R.I.P king!

You loved your family, you loved to work, you loved to ride your bike, and you loved to laugh. You kept us laughing and we will miss your smiling face. Meya, our hearts and prayers go out to you, the kids and all of your family. We love you Oliver...Rest In Peace!

First i would like to give my deepest sympathy to the Jones Family, and i am so so sorry for your loss. I hope that God will shine on your family and get you thru this most difficult time. I was a rider in the 14.5 M.C. and after one of my friends nearly died after a crash i kind of lost the thrill to ride curves,so when i rode with the club i always hang back, it was no thing to me i rode a 1300 GSXR, and then there was another time i rode with the group, one of the guys that was trying to join the club got killed that day and i just quit all together it was just so sad to see all those young lives destroyed .I am still gone ride my bike but i will respect it. I love motorcycles the same as Mr. Jones did, i am no way bashing him, but things can go wrong just going to the store or around the corner .I have learned to have great respect for the power that these machines have, and will continue too. To the Swat M.C. Family i wanna say that i am sorry for the loss of one of your own.BWASH

Regardless of what he was riding when he was killed is irrelevant. The fact is a woman lost her husband, his children lost their father and his parents lost a son. All of the negative comments about motorcycles can be said about reckless drivers in cars. This was a living breathing person who fought for his country and loved his family. Had this tragic accident not happened, he would have been leaving for IRAQ to defend his country yet again. So for everyone with something negative to say keep it to your self because if this were your loved one you would be deeply offended by some of the rude and crude comments submitted by some. Love and prayers to his family.

To "Granny" Again I feel so sorry for Sgt. Jones and his family, but I KNOW what happened! I was working on a gate, about 30 yards from where Sgt. Jones left the pavement, when the mishap occured. There was one person closer than I, that was the biker beside him as he went off the road. So, Granny, I do not have to guess or 'think', I was there. May GOD be with Sgt. Jones' friends and family at this time.

I am sorry I do these things........trying to rile everyone up. As a mater of fact I own guns and I ride a motorcycle I just like to get everyone upset here, hehehe

We all do things in our lives that will eventually kill us, we over eat, drink, smoke, ride a bike, or even walk into a store. We have the FREEDOM to do these things because of men and women like Oliver. I don't like motorcyles but i would never knock someone down who does. Instead of negative comments which is your right due to FREEDOM of speach why not write something kind and heartfelt to the famiy. I would rather die doing something I love then have someone I don't know choose my time to die. So for all of you who have written kind words...good for you and for those of you didn't think about how your family would feel reading comments like that about you!!!

Posted by: LMAO Location: Temple on Jun 24, 2008 at 11:20 AM
aww.. I feel bad for rachel. None the less this is about Mr Jones. The story written is not even all of the story. Blame the editor. Know what issues were with the bike not the driver/rider. We all have a right to the road just be careful of your surroundings. God bless you JONES family and close friends of him.

Posted by: Salvador Hurtado Location: Copperas Cove on Jun 24, 2008 at 10:54 AM
To everyone who knew him and loved him keep on living well just like he did. He made us laugh and cry but the life he lived in and out of the Army was one I will remember from this day forward. Meya, take care and always remind your children how much He loved them. To everyone else, this is not a man who lived life on the edge so please don't judge him with your opinions. Know this man before you say anything. Above all remember that he is a soldier and did his time in the sand box like most of us. All my prayers go out to his family and fellow riders. May he live forever in the highways of heaven and hope one day we meet again.

Posted by: Granny Location: California on Jun 24, 2008 at 10:46 AM
The person who wrote "get a job, buy a truck", is wrong, Oliver had a job, he was an American Soldier, he fought several overseas battles for your "right" to write mean evil statements about him at his death, for your information, he owned a truck...and had a beautiful wife and family, he loved his home, his neighbors, his life, for any of you to add your two cents here in a negative way when you only are speaking of things you have seen on that road, or of other bikers, is ludicrious...no one needs to add anything to this tragic story except prayers and support to this soldier's family. I have known Oliver for one year, and in that year, he taught me more about fatherhood and care for a family than I have seen in my 56 years. I challenge each of you to stop the comments about what you think happened, I repeat think that you know what happened. Our friend is gone won't you who did not know him, please respect what was true in his life, his smile was way bigger than your insinuations.

RACHEAL..PLEASE DO US ALL A FAVOR AND SHUT UP....U HAVE TOO MUCH TIME ON YOUR HANDS..GET A JOB..U PROBABLY DON'T OWN A CAR..YOU SOUND LIKE A BACK SEAT RIDER..YOU THINK YOU KNOW IT ALL.EVERYONE IS ENTITLE TO THERE OWN OPINION.WHAT MAKES YOUR OPINION SO RIGHT..IS THERE ANYONE IN YOUR HOME YOU CAN TALK TOO..BY THE LOOKS OF YOUR COMENTS YOU SEEM LIKE A LONER.....HMMMMM

Posted by: Biker Location: the road on Jun 24, 2008 at 09:09 AM
Racheal, the bikes "pop out of nowhere" because car drivers, like you, don't look around you. You don't pay attention. That's the point. Turn your head and look. Don't just count on your mirrors to show you everything. That's why they call them "Blind Spots" And just because you are too scared to ride a bike doesn't mean that those of us that do are reckless. I personaly would never ride a horse, but doesn't that other people can't, or shouldn't.

Posted by: Karen Location: Belton on Jun 24, 2008 at 09:05 AM
I think Rachael needs to get a life, a job, whatever. She is always commenting on articles like this just to start some drama, get a life girl!!

Posted by: Erica Location: Killeen on Jun 24, 2008 at 08:41 AM
Rest in Peace Oliver. My prayers are with you and your family. He was a loving husband, father, and a caring neighbor. This must be a horible time for his family, and all of these negative comments aren't helping anything. Keep them to your selves. Again my prayers are with you.

God Bless you and your family. i dont know you but im so sorry for your loss. Everyone on here needs to remember he left a family behind and they read these messages. So some people on here if you cant leave message without thinking how the family hurts then dont leave one. Again God bless you and your family. God Speed.

Posted by: Aaron Location: fm2484 on Jun 24, 2008 at 06:50 AM
May GOD be with his family at this trying time. Some bikers drive by slower now but others are still going 150-200 mph. One said he goes over 170 mph another told me he has had his bike up to 190 mph. There was no car involved this time. Only Sgt. Jones and the 'biker' next to him when he veered off the road. I feel sorry for him and his family but the posted speed limit on fm 2484 is 60 mph and slower around many curves. Maybe now Bell County S.O. and/or TDPS will patrol this road to stop the races that occur every weekend and many week days. Also there could be a race wat set up at Ft. Hood so these young people could race and not be as much danger to themselves and the driving public as they are on a public road.

Posted by: motherof1 Location: bosque county on Jun 24, 2008 at 04:23 AM
Rachel, honestly i read the news to find out whats going on. But i think you have a different motive. correct me if I'm wrong but you come on this website and read all of the headlines just so you can post some idiotic comment and have people respond to you so you can argue with them. I'm going to have to go with "Dude" on this one, you must sit in your "rubber room" all day in front of your computer checking up on new headlines to see which one you can post the dumbest comment on. sad. get a life.

Posted by: Anonymous on Jun 24, 2008 at 01:14 AM
get a job and buy a truck. and this want happen as much. grown men dont belong on a motor bike.

Posted by: anonymous on Jun 24, 2008 at 12:34 AM
Rachel: You can't protect everyone. It's not your job! If someone wants to own a gun or ride a motorcycle, it is their right. You can't take that away and quite frankly, it is none of your business. You can't police everyone else's choices! Live and let live. A good man lost his life. May he rest in peace.

Posted by: Rachel on Jun 23, 2008 at 11:58 PM
The reason I say motorcycles are dangerous is because the pop up out of nowhere. They speed in and out of cars too close. And when there's a big group riding, they "hog" the road. These are all dangers to everyone driving.

Take the aggressive riding to the race track guys. There are organizations out there for us. RideSmart Trackdays and Lonestar Trackdays rent closed-circuit road courses for us sportbikes. All you do is sign-up, bring your bike, and riding gear. You are divided up into different skill levels. There are 2 ambulances on site just in case. I used to ride twisty roads at 120mph through turns on 2484, straight parts were over 150mph. I grew up, I became responsible, & now it stays on the race track & I just enjoy the scenery now on my sportbike when Im on 2484. Its easy to get caught up in the momment with friends/egos to show who may or may not be the fastest amongest you. Now one of you is dead, how fun is it now? Remember all you non-motorcycle owners, bikes don't kill people, people kill people so next time you make a lane change in your car TURN your neck to see if the next lane is clear. Seriously guys/gals, look into doing a trackday instead of the streets. Seeajgo@hotmail.com

R.I.P. brother, you will be missed and never forgotten, and my heart also goes out to your family. and for the critics on here, no one cares about your opinion about bikes, have some respect.

Posted by: stephanie Location: groesbeck on Jun 23, 2008 at 06:34 PM
My husband rides a Harley Ultra Classic. He has ridden bikes for a long time and never had an accident. His last bike had over 100,000. miles on it. We have had people in cars pull out in front of us and push us over by changing lanes on us. We keep both sets of our eyes open for this. I will admit that I have seen people on the crotch rockets going entirely too fast but I have also witnessed people in cars doing the same thing. I have a friend who will admit to your face that she does not do the speed limit when she drives. If the posted speed is 70 she will do 80 to 85. I don't understand the logic in this so I won't ride with her. I am sorry for his family.

Man, Oliver you were such a great person. My heart goes out to all of the family members and friends. I pray that as time goes by, the heartache & pain is soften until all that remains is love and happy memories you all shared together. Rest in peace Olver

Well if those other riders were riding as reckless as he was, according to the witness, they should be charges for Criminal Negligent Homicide in my opinion to contributing to his death by riding the way they were.

I think Rachel loves to create drama. Just ignore her until she makes a statement worth responding to. Isn't that what she asked us to do in another post? Yeah, we'll read and respond to them when they have merit. My prayers are with the family of this tragic accident.

Posted by: LN Location: Robinson on Jun 23, 2008 at 03:24 PM
Rachel: How are motorcycles "dangerous to the rider and other vehicles"? If properly ridden a motorcycle is no more dangerous than your car that kills 45,000 people a year. I guess we should ban cars too by your logic?

Posted by: Anonymous on Jun 23, 2008 at 03:06 PM
This is just another typical idiot on a motorcycle driving too fast. This happens to a GI at least once a week or so, they need to ban them from the "DONORCYCLES" !!!!

My husband drives a motorcycle..and its not because he is trying to be macho its because gas prices are so high. He drives very carefully and even took the riding courses to show how to protect yourself from accidents. He has been in lots of "almost" accidents and let me tell you it has always been because some idiot in a car was driving careless, and this could happen to anyone whether they are in a car or on a bike, so please when you say ignorant things like "why do they insist on driving these things" just remember that even if you are in a car an accident can happen. When its your time God will take you home!

Posted by: Lisa Location: Florence on Jun 23, 2008 at 12:37 PM
Actually I was partially to witness of this, my family and i were on our way home when this group of riders (that i see reguarly in that area) came screaming around us at a VERY high rate of speed even passing us as another car was oncoming to the point that he was basically in between the 2 vehicles. Then before we knew it we were driving up on them on the side of the road. At the time (which we have learned now) we were unaware of the accident or we would have tried to render assistance. I am sorry that now to hear that such a beautiful day ended so tragically...please to the rest of you...please slow down!! My hearts out to the family and friends. Again, Please slow down...

"Use your heads and quit trying to drive fast and show off..."...if riders would use the head with the brain in it, stuff like this wouldnt happen! Got to be cool! Got to be macho! Now someone is dead! I cannot imagine my wife and kids alone because of something like this! I hope the guy i saw the other day popping wheelies while going down the road sees this article and gets the message that careless riding can cost you your life and hurt so many people!

I live near 2484 and see about 5 to 8 motorcycles going up and down Youngsport road daily. I would estimate their speeds in excess of 100 MPH, so I'm not suprised.

I cannot decribe the pain I feel for his mother Pauline and his wife and children. Oliver, even though we did not keep in touch like family should, I will miss the times we did have together. Brandon and I was just talking about the 4th of July you and JG came to visit and you guys started chasing each other in the parking lot with fireworks like little children. Oliver, you were so beautiful (inside and out) and you will never be forgotten. I LOVE YOU CUZ!!!!

Rachel- Motorcycles are no more dangerous than cars, and usually it is the cars that are the dangerous ones acting like they own the road and there is no one else out there. Accidents happen maybe he was traveling too fast but people do that in cars too. Don't be a hater. May God be with the family.

I drive 2484 on a daily basis and have been passed by bikers and sporty cars, there are too many curves and blind spots on this road for fast driving, you could come around a corner by Youngsport and find yourself running into farm equipment or a truck at the quarry.

This is ridiculous. Why are all these soldiers getting killed on "Crotch Rockets?" After a few deaths, you would think that they would learn. I'm not saying the man deserved to die by any means, but sometimes when you mess with fire you're gonna get burned. Use your heads and quit trying to drive fast and show off...
