WACO (May 15, 2013)—Waco police Wednesday morning released the identity of a Gatesville man who drowned Tuesday in Lake Waco.

Waco police Sgt. W. Patrick Swanton said Clyde Ives, 65, of Gatesville, drowned as he was trying to launch a boat at Speegleville Park in the 3400 block of Over Flow Road.

McLennan County Justice of the Peace Kristi DeCluitt pronounced Ives dead at the scene just before noon Tuesday and did not order an autopsy.

In a news release issued Wednesday morning Swanton said there were no signs of foul play at the scene.

“It appears that Mr. Ives lost contact of his boat while unloading at the ramp,” Swanton said.

“It is believed that Mr. Ives attempted to retrieve the boat and accidentally drowned while doing so,” Swanton said.

A witness said she spotted an empty boat floating just offshore and a truck and a boat trailer on a ramp in Speegleville Park.

She said she and others secured the boat and then spotted the man's body floating in the water.

Police and firefighters were sent to the park at around noon Tuesday.

Ives was in the water for about 30 minutes before his body was found, police at the scene said.
