Rep. Joe Barton, R-Ennis, whose district includes several Central Texas counties, suffered a heart attack, an aide said Friday.

Barton, a native of Waco, was hospitalized Thursday after falling ill during a meeting.

An aide to the House Energy and Commerce Committee chairman said Barton is resting comfortably in George Washington University Hospital.

Barton press secretary Karen Modlin says Barton is negotiating his release date with his doctor and hopes to return to work soon.

Barton has served as congressman from the 6th Congressional District since 1984.

The district includes Ellis, Navarro, Freestone, Leon and Houston counties and parts of Tarrant, Trinity and Limestone counties.

He has already announced plans to seek another term.
