CORSICANA (June 4, 2013)—A Navarro County Justice of the Peace on Monday identified a man who was shot to death by Corsicana police after a confrontation last Saturday.
Judge Connie Hickman said Eliseo Mercado, 21, died Saturday after a confrontation with Corsicana police at Cottonwood Trailer Park.
A police news release shows officers were sent at 1:30 a.m. Saturday to the trailer park in the 900 block of Cottonwood Circle.
When police arrived they saw Mercado, who was holding a handgun, and ordered him to drop the weapon, but he refused.
Officers at the scene said Mercado began pointing the gun at his own head, then at an officer, and opened fire.
Other officers at the scene returned gunfire and Mercado was hit.
Names of the officers involved have not been released but it was known that three officers have been placed on paid administrative leave while Texas Rangers investigate the incident.
