(June 25, 2008)--American Airlines said Wednesday it plans to cut back flights later this year in and out of Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, including nearly two dozen by American Eagle, which serves both Waco and Killeen.

American did not identify which flights would be dropped.

The carrier also plans to cut 19 mainline flights at DFW.

American also said Wednesday it will drop 62 mainline and regional flights in Chicago.

Flights in and out of St. Louis, once a major hub for American, will drop by 43, while New York's LaGuardia airport will lose 42 American flights.

The cutbacks in St. Louis and New York primarily affect shorter regional flights.

In addition, American will quit flying altogether to Oakland, Calif.; London Stansted; Barranquilla, Colombia; Albany, N.Y.; Providence, R.I.; Harrisburg, Pa.; Samana, Dominican Republic; and
San Luis Obispo, Calif.

The reductions will take effect in November, American said.

Last month American announced that in September it will discontinue its Chicago-Buenos Aires service, its Boston-San Diego Service and that it would operate Chicago-Honolulu service only on peak demand days until January 2009 when the service will be discontinued.

It also announced restructuring of American and American Eagle operations in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

The cuts are part of a plan announced on May 21 to reduce domestic capacity by 11 to 12 percent and regional capacity by 10 to 11 percent in the fourth quarter of the year.

The announcement came on the same day as the release of an analysis by the Business Travel Coalition, which concluded that service to Waco Regional Airport could be cut or even eliminated because of what the group says is a looming crisis in the airline industry caused by soaring fuel prices.
